My reminder that protected bike lanes significantly improve safety for EVERYONE on the road--including seniors. A DOT study found protected bike lanes reduce senior pedestrian deaths and serious injuries by 39% and total senior pedestrian injuries by 22%. www.nyc.gov/html/dot/dow...

A strange but true finding about NYC congestion pricing:

Drivers’ time savings have overwhelmingly gone to those traveling *outside* the toll zone (i.e., driving from Brooklyn to Queens or within NJ) – not those headed into Manhattan.

Me, in Bloomberg 🧵
Congestion Pricing’s Unexpected Winners: Suburban Drivers
NYC’s controversial toll program hasn’t just sped up trips inside Manhattan, a new paper finds. It’s easing traffic in outer boroughs and neighboring counties.

Keith Haring’s massive FDR Drive mural from 1984 is on display now in Chinatown. It was endearing seeing all the tags made over the work.

Speed governors are part of a true safe systems approach. We’ve seen the most dangerous drivers continue driving—even after licenses are suspended. This tool isn’t focused on punishment, but simply preventing these drivers from speeding in the first place. empire.streetsblog.org/state-of-the...
State of the State Exclusive: Hochul Will Push 'Stop Super Speeders' Bill Through Her Budget - Streetsblog Empire State
New York City motorists with a documented pattern of excessive speeding would be required to install speed-limiting devices inside their cars, Gov. Hochul is expected to announce today.

Did just this when I was last in NYC with some conference friends, and it was glorious. Chicago could use these too!
NYC definitely needs way more of these double-wide bike lanes.

Being able to calmly bike next to someone is the sort of low stress trip I think a lot of people are waiting for before trying to cycle around the city.

Definitely me included!

Worth underscoring: DOT expects a level of undercounting at these sensors due to bikes missing them, sensitivity of sensors, or other interferences. All but one location included in the study had smaller levels of undercounting.
TLDR on the study:
🚲 video counts find 25% more bikes than DOT counters
🚲 motorized ⚡ stuff was 74% of vehicles in bike lanes
🚲 23% of the total appeared to be commercial
🚲 Observations were made in Jan 2025 (there has been more growth since (www.amny.com/nyc-transit/...)

Cannot wait to see this work continue down to Grand Army Plaza next year with the block-long, concrete bus boarding islands, which will really make Flatbush feel much calmer and help pedestrians cross more easily.
We're a little shy of two months into the new Flatbush Ave center running bus lane fragment and it seems like drivers have largely gotten the message:

🚌 FEAR THE BUS LANE. RESPECT THE BUS LANE. 🚌

One cool thing about this bike lane is that it is reducing crossing distance on my corner and making it safer for me to cross Court Street, which I do approximately a million and one times every day.
Fresh paint on the Court Street bike lane. Gotta love it.

The new street design for Court Street in Brooklyn, where I live, continues to be finished. Today, painting new lane. It’s GREAT!

✅ no more speeders
✅ car & bike traffic moves smoothly
✅ bikes in lane, not intermixed into cars & vice versa
✅ no double parkers
✅ looks nicer

As part of NYC DOT's quarterly Vision Zero update, we highlighted a few recent street redesigns that brought major safety gains. On Schermerhorn St, pedestrian injuries dropped 31% while bike ridership grew 30%. As we've seen all over, bike lanes make streets safer for pedestrians, too.
