On White Plains Road in the Bronx, new protected bike lanes and concrete bus boarding islands delivered a 41% decrease in motor vehicle occupant injuries and a 10% decrease in total injuries. That's because, as we've also seen across the city, bike lanes make streets safer for people in cars.

As part of NYC DOT's quarterly Vision Zero update, we highlighted a few recent street redesigns that brought major safety gains. On Schermerhorn St, pedestrian injuries dropped 31% while bike ridership grew 30%. As we've seen all over, bike lanes make streets safer for pedestrians, too.

amNY can mislead its readers for whatever agenda it may have, but the facts are that the city has experienced a record low number of fatalities through the first half of the year and continues to see downward fatality trends across *every single mode* year to date.

The 1st phase of the 31st Ave Bike Blvd in Astoria is complete and looks great. Sharing some photos as NYC DOT was nearly done. Dramatically more pedestrian space, much safer pedestrian crossings, and high-comfort cycling connecting to the waterfront and Manhattan. More: www.nyc.gov/html/dot/htm...

Today NYC DOT is beginning distributing certified, fire-safe e-bikes + batteries to delivery workers as part of our trade-in program. Workers are trading uncertified e-bikes and illegal mopeds in exchange. Here’s the bike for distribution & 1 of the mopeds being traded in.

NYC DOT is rolling out a new design for conventional bike lanes that will improve safety + visibility for everyone at crossings, where half of all traffic deaths occur. The agency will begin adding these along select new & existing lanes w/high crash rates. More: www.nyc.gov/html/dot/htm...

Today NYC DOT outlined the 2025 projects it will be installing to begin building out the Harlem River Greenway in the Bronx. The 1st completed project, in Highbridge, adds bike lanes on the Depot Place ramp connecting to the river. Some great before-and-afters. Info here: www.nyc.gov/html/dot/htm...

Starting this spring, NYC DOT will be installing 11 concrete pedestrian islands and 2 bus boarding islands along Queens Boulevard, upgrading existing painted spaces from 35th St to 43rd St. More capacity to build with concrete = more upgrades like this.

Each day, 28,000 commuters depend on the buses along 34th Street in Manhattan, but too often it can be just as fast to walk as it is to take the bus. Check out NYC DOT's proposal for a 34th Street busway to make these commutes faster and more reliable: www.nyc.gov/html/dot/htm...

Setting aside that every worker deserves to be safe on the job, the idea that a widened bike lane wouldn’t benefit “regular” cyclists is so laughable no wonder not a single rider is quoted.

Another: Most of 6th Ave is *already 3 lanes.* This just brings the remaining stretch from 14th to 35th to 3 lanes, eliminating merging and making it easier for drivers to navigate. It’s common sense. All research shows these projects help save the lives of pedestrians, cyclists, & people in cars.

Next: NYC DOT‘s data shows the removal of a lane to bring life-saving upgrades won’t bring any real change to car speeds—even if we had pre-congestion relief zone volumes. The agency modeled the project using pre-toll vehicle counts. So there’s even more room to work with before touching speeds.

There are so many demonstrably untrue claims in this Post story about our Sixth Avenue project. Let’s go over each one.
