Someone should ask Starmer and Mahmood whether they think the Kindertransport, for example, should have been a return ticket. Whether Alf Dubs, rather than becoming a Labour MP and now Lord, ought to have been sent back with his family to Czechoslovakia once it was liberated from German rule.
This contribution to the volume of human misery is yet another policy from Labour based on a false premise, in this case that refugees are overly attracted to Britain. It will increase bureaucratic limbo, thus making worse the problem of "cohesion" it purports to solve.

UK set to limit refugees to temporary stays
Shabana Mahmood is expected to say the era of permanent protection for refugees is over, in major changes to the UK's asylum and immigration system.

With recognition that this is not the main point of the overall email scandal, but this is important: someone at your university has tried this with a student. It is so incredibly rampant and if you're disgusted by this you need to also demand accountability closer to home.
The emails have Summers reporting to Epstein about his attempts to date a Harvard economics student & to hit on her during a seminar she was giving.

The US environmental regulator focused on economic growth?

Thankfully that's not what the UK is doing...

...surely not?
In the first eight months of Trump’s second term, the Justice Department filed only nine major pollution cases for the EPA.

The shift in enforcement shows the extent to which the Trump administration has reoriented the agency toward promoting economic growth. https://wapo.st/4os3LNF

Now official - the EU has weakened its planned 2040 emissions reduction target at the insistence of national governments.

It is part of the overall story of Europe backtracking on its goals to fight climate change - party because of Trump pressure, partly because of changing public attitudes.
EU countries agree weakened 2040 climate goal and target for COP30
The deal avoids the EU going empty handed to the COP30 climate summit starting on Nov. 10.

I'm meant to advise colleagues on a funding strategy soon.

If my advice is anything other than "do not waste your time applying", it is shit advice because it's unrealistic.

If it's "do not waste your time applying", it is also shit advice because of career demands.

Welcome to academia!
After submitting a FOIA request UKRI, I obtained success rates by three grant call scheme and I can only say that I am disheartened by the results:

Yes, they are actually saying that a "foreigner" who has worked here for decades, paid National Insurance, & is entitled BECAUSE OF THAT to a state pension, would be deported for the crime of claiming it.
Via @sundersays.bsky.social the Conservatives' draft legislation - absolutely clear that it applies to (and is intended to apply to) legal permanent residents claiming state pension (on the basis of their contributions) or child benefit for British kids.

As Sarkozy heads to prison today (🍾) it's important to not gloss over how bad the charges against him were. This is not a petty political judgement but a stark indictment of how far the RPR then UMP went to get extra funds for financing political campaigns. 👇
