“As we reach another January 6th, this one in the full throes of his horrific second term, what’s now impossible to deny is that the insurrection we thought was defeated four years ago was simply postponed.”

I've watched thousands of videos from the Jan. 6 riot as part of NPR's reporting and archive project on that day.

Here are some of the lesser known videos that have really stuck with me.

Her little friend wanted me to use ChatGPT to do some task for them the other day and I was aghast; people are letting children learn that information is a discrete thing you query and have delivered to you, not something you question, seek out, refine, assess, consider, refine some more etc

I may have, uh, suggested that this should…have some discussion with parents and guardians. I truly don’t want the kid in question to start thinking in ai prompts when their brain IS STILL LEARNING HOW TO HUMAN. This is easily as important to me as permission for sex ed classes.

This too, guys. Find a little corner of the world and pay it some loving attention: fostering change you can observe. We are silly monkeys, we need to see the real world to believe it exists, and to know the whole world isn't what we passively consume and share onscreen.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of finding one constructive real world offline thing you can do to use your particular skills in service of fighting fascism as a psychological defense against the constant drumbeat of fuckery
my hot take is that I don't think it's this website specifically that's toxic. the Circumstances are toxic and nobody really knows what to do about it so they come online and scream. and if I may offer an alternative: actually going outside and screaming feels better.

Don't let this Jan 6th point get lost:

Jack Smith testified to Congress he had "proof beyond a reasonable doubt that President Trump engaged in a criminal scheme to overturn the results of the 2020 election."

In other words, he could prove in court that Trump attempted a coup.

This is a catastrophe.

1. Devices are as important to regulate as pharmaceuticals.

2. The market is notoriously bad at determining safety, accuracy, and which technologies are in the public interest.

3. Even when the market does tell us when a tech is bad, it does so *after it has caused harm*.
“FDA Commissioner Marty Makary indicated that one of the agency’s priorities is fostering an environment that’s good for investors… The new approach appears to open the door to the unregulated use of generative AI products for certain medical tasks, such as summarizing a radiologist’s findings.”
FDA announces sweeping changes to oversight of wearables, AI-enabled devices
The FDA will ease regulation of digital health products, aiming to deregulate AI and promote its widespread use.

Yes, it's a myth that graphic novels are "easy reading." They can be quite challenging. But the visuals can provide a hook and support for certain kinds of readers. And for highly accelerated verbal learners, they can help hone their visual reading skills.
My sister says that, for her young students just learning to read, graphic novels are actually harder to read than children's novels because almost every line in a comic is dialogue, which often has different sentence structure than narration.

I wish I'd thought sooner to explain to tradpub editors that illustrating a graphic novel is not like writing a prose novel or illustrating a picture book, a 250-page GN is actually like illustrating eight picture books.

This is why I wish we had a Cartoonist's Guild. Not a collective. Not a union (legally not possible). But a guild with collective bargaining (and insurance omg).

But who of us has the time to maintain one??? We are kept so damn busy bleeding our fingers dry for publishers who have NO CLUE.

Tired of being twenty years uninsured and having no minumum page rates. We HAVE to change this or the burnout cycle on talent is going to continue in perpetuity.

Sick of seeing the insanely gifted people in our field having to leave because they got sick or want to live above the barest subsistence

Sincere question and I hope we can make a safe place for this discussion, are there people out there who feel like they don't know how to get involved and make a difference?

What do you feel like the barriers are for you getting involved in organizing?

Have you tried and failed?

This thread sparked a good discussion. One thing I'm taking away from this is that many of y'all NEED MUTUAL AID YOURSELVES.

So many people here are struggling and asking how they can give back while they're broke and sick and caring for children or elderly family BY THEMSELVES without community.

We survived the year-turning! Woohoo!!!

Naming the new year is kind of a big deal in THE LAST HOUR BETWEEN WORLDS. I've had chats with friends about what they'd name the year and I think my favorite suggestion was the Year of Delicious Pastries (technically it shoud be 1 word, but shhhhh pastries).

Scrolling a bit here tells me a couple things:
1. Everyone's reactive right now
2. It is easier to yell at people you agree with on 90% of things than it is to engage with people who you flat out disagree with (I'm not saying you should!)
3. Nothing is resolved by said yelling, but it is exhausting
