And do you think that unto such as you
A maggot-minded, starved, fanatic crew
God gave the secret, and denied it me?
Well, well—what matters it? Believe that, too!

OS apps like Obsidian, taskell, harsh, etc could link into this. This could be set locally and synced through Dropbox, hosted on a droplet or home server, or served through a third-party secure host like Proton.

Could allow for convenience of monolith apps but security and ownership of open source!
What if there were an open source "backend protocol" system that:

- had an easy schema protocol for any number of other OS apps to tie into
- could be self-hosted
- could gracefully handle syncing
- could be encrypted by the owner
- potentially could be peer-linked like Mastodon or Bsky

Today was the first time I heard an ad that was like "AI was supposed to help you but instead it's made everything harder and more confusing! We have a *new* AI product that can help you navigate all those *old AI* problems."

So that's something.

Many times I'm about to repost something that seems bad, & then I catch myself: Do I understand enough about it to write an article? To write even an undergrad reading response? If I don't, doesn't mean the thing isn't bad! It does mean that I'd risk spreading misinformation, which is its own bad.

The Israeli genocide continues as expected: with all infrastructure brutally and intentionally destroyed, Palestinians in Gaza are dying from Israel's continued blockade on aid, Israel's continued land theft, and Israel's continued murdering.

Huge scoop from Ed, who had several years of financial reports leaked to him. OpenAI has been over-reporting their revenue. The company is even less profitable than we knew.
Exclusive: Based on documents viewed by this newsletter, OpenAI spent over $12.4 billion on inference from 2024 to September 2025. As part of its Microsoft revenue share, it sent $493.8m in 2024/$865.8m Jan-Sep 2025, implying lower revenues than previously reported.

Yo @iwriteok.bsky.social, I'm finally getting around to the Heinrich Himmler episodes, and... this is definitely Vance for us, right? Thought it might be Miller up front but something about the smarminess and deep seated cringing kissass energy really sells it as Vance for me.

Like we really need to internalize that the response to fascism is to reject any equivalence between violent, supremacist, or exceptionalist ideologies & other ideologies that are defensive, communal, or constructive. Even when the former masquerade as the latter. You just have to reject that.

In America, history is aspirational
It's a weird artifact of (mostly) American journalists copying British journalists despite the fact that most Americans pronounce the "h" in "historic".

People are free to pronounce things however they want, but it sounds strange because it's an uncommon combination of sounds in American English.
“an historic” just feels wrong

An outstanding interview. Patrick Iber of Dissent Magazine has interviewed the legendary Polish political scientist Adam Przeworski about de-democratisation in the USA, and what lessons he’s gleaned from Chile, Peru & beyond.

Iber’s questions are stellar. Przeworski’s answers, chillingly candid.

I came from Kirk's world. It is a standard evangelical dualism to profess love for the targets of their violence, even amidst the act. And their targets aren't going to be recently-ex-Maga white boys with guns like the actual shooter -- they're going to be trans and queer Americans like his partner.
Some pundits praise Erika Kirk for her forgiveness, calling it an example for all. This is witless. One needn’t question the *sincerity* of her statements to do the basic work of reading public politics as such, by asking “what does *she* mean? What do her followers hear?”

“Sincerity” has been the sand trap of American public life for a century. So many conflate it with virtue in itself; so many others, encountering ugly politics, focus on what they then imagine must be their lack of sincerity, rather than the facts of real, sincere, brutality.
