Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein is interesting because he takes parts of Shelley's novel, the iconic James Whale films, Gothic and Romantic influences, and a meditation on fatherhood and stitches them all together to create his own story. It's a great adaptation but still like the book the best

New transfer student at my elementary school today. I still can't get over the fact that there is no legal obligation to teach foreign born students. And Japanese as a Second Language is basically not a subject so there's also no way to get these kids up to speed. Dropping out is all that's left

So Medium as a platform is just cooked, huh? Language learning, linguistics, and media analysis aren't exactly the most SEO friendly so I guess I just need my own place to write the stuff I want to write

In EFL teaching we should be talking about why we only teach either American or British English so I don't want to sound too glib. But doesn't the same thing happen with American kids and Peppa Pig or Bluey? My kid says pants, toilet, and footpath and that's not what I say. We both say dude, though
This doom-laden op-ed (by a teacher writing for the Telegraph) links the supposed Americanisation of young people's English to screen time, cultural imperialism (although the Telegraph would never use such a wooooke term), the nanny state and unboxing videos.

Canada I love you (Go, Blue Jays!) but this is just Canadian exceptionalism. It never happens. You think you're "Ahh when we do imperialism we're real sorry about it, eh" image is that different from us? The blood-soaked history that we share is a difference of degrees not of kind. Sorry
Americans are ‘flag jacking’ to pretend they’re Canadian overseas - here’s why it doesn’t work

Republicans control all three branches of government and yet the US is about to do a Great Potato Famine to itself. You never have to hand it to the British but at least they did it to another country... many other countries

Every single problem other fields are seeing, we saw first because we were deemed most expendable. Machine TL hallucinated. They said it'd make us more productive, not redundant. And more offers became about training and correcting. Loc has always been the canary and not enough people listened.

Picture this exact scenario, but it started happening a decade ago and now every agency you work with won't shut up about you taking more time for less pay to correct their magic machine's mistakes and you'll have just the slightest idea what your games' localizers have put up with this whole time.

The Frozen movies have been playing nonstop for 3 days in our house. And the core message seems to be, "no matter how much we want to love our siblings, the trauma caused by our parents (and grandparents) doesn't easily heal"
Or am I telling on myself here?

Anyone who's studied computational linguistics wouldn't even be calling these things "AI". But, for the sake of argument, yes, narrow domain specific LLMs used by professionals in that field could be transformational someday.

ChatGPT isn't AI and won't be around in a few years though
There are basically only two positions in the debate about AI.
1. I’ve barely invested any time in learning how to use it effectively. AI sucks.
2. I’ve invested in learning how to use this tool. Holy cow, it’s transformational.

Position #1 has lower barriers to entry.

Aside from Omusubi, NHK has been on a solid run of interesting Asadora stories. Bakebake has been good so far and Akari Takaichi was great casting. My wife's never heard of Lafcadio Hearn so I'm enjoying it too (sharing fun facts she didn't ask for but, for now, tolerates)

This maybe isn't just a Japan thing but it's so strange how many parents here just want English downloaded into their children and don't want to be involved in the learning process. So many people's idea of English, including teachers, is test prep and logic puzzles, not language

So looking back, will the release of Sora2 and SlopTok be marked as the start of the AI bubble burst? Or is that just wishful thinking?
