In our sound course today we performed much of Paragraph 7 of Cardew's "The Great Learning." I didn't record; it was just for us. And it was at times goofy and occasionally seriously lovely.

Thanks to American Campus, the podcast about the history of higher education, for featuring my book. We talk about how NPR and PBS emerged from equal access to education discourses. And how Media Studies originated as a strategy of public media activism.

How Terry Riley’s “In C” became a generation-defining crossover hit, marking the major-label arrival of a pulse-based musical revolution—now known as minimalism.
When the Man Tried to Sell Minimalism to the Counterculture
Columbia Records saw Terry Riley’s “In C,” now rereleased for his ninetieth birthday, as a perfect anthem for the psychedelic Zeitgeist, but the mainstream couldn’t contain the composer’s utopian ener...

It IS great
Turns out there’s a movie adaptation of LAST AND FIRST MEN?

Narrated by Tilda Swinton??

It covers the final sequence about the 18th men (on Neptune in two billion years) and is spoken word over moody panning shots of brutalist war memorials in the former Yugoslavia

Is great.

Delighted to have interviewed with WBUR's Meghna Chakrabarti "On Point." First half discusses the historical intricacies of the US public media ecosystem. Second half I tried to detail how the GOP rescission bill was designed to attack democratic media.

The U.S. Congress cut federal funding for public media, shuttering the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. What does that mean for the future of local news across the country?

AAA estimates the average cost of owning a car is $12,297 a year, and recommends drivers spend no more than 10 percent of their income on car costs. This means you should make 120K to afford the average cost. Median *household* income in the US is $77K. The math just doesn't work.

I gave an in-depth interview with my hometown Chicago Tribune about what’s going to happen to NPR and PBS, and how cutting public media is part of a broader anti-democratic ideological project.

I'd like my first-year students to spend time exploring how the act of reading words compares to engaging with other forms of content (audio, video, etc.). Do you have any favorite readings / content / activities on that topic that you've used in class?

TROUBLE WITH PEOPLE is live on Spotify, Apple Music, etc. The album starts ambient, dark, and noisy, but the 5th track marks a change and it all gets…various after that. Made it to be listened to straight through, but feel free to jump around. I hope there’s something there for everyone.

Today marks the 9th anniversary of my object-a project. Made w/ modular synths, tape, field recordings, my voice, etc. - the album is variously ambient, noisy, cheerful, melancholy, experimental, comfy, abrasive, and drone-y. Free on Bandcamp.
