instant mousse. 1.5tbsp of cream, half-teaspoon of sugar and cocoa powder [adj to taste]. Stir vigourously with a spoon for 30sec or a minute until it goes stiff, put back in rhe fridge for 15min to cool down again, serves 1. Will be annoying to do more than a couple of these.

Social cohesion? cohesion is when some kind of thing sticks to itself. If you want different kinds of things sticking together you want adhesion.

Folks outside SF/F don't know that Asimov was a sexual harasser because while he was alive fandom thought it was cute (up to and including Asimov being invited to give a lecture on "The Power of Positive Posterior Pinching" at Worldcon, which he, wisely, declined).

Announcement this morning recommending that Newport bound passengers change at Flinders St from the Frankston line.

This is TERRIBLE advice - it'd add at 8 minutes to journeys, and potentially much more.

In the morning, change at Southern Cross.

In the afternoon, change at Flinders Street.

A self driving vehicle should never put pedestrians or cyclists at risk. If a five year old runs out between two parked cars it needs to be able to detect that and stop.
If it can't it shouldn't be on the road
February 2, 2026 at 5:18 PM
If an autonomous car's systems can't adequately respond to a randomly-appearing pedestrian then it can't respond to any other spontaneous hazard and is not safe. A safe autonomous vehicle doesn't need hazards mapped in advance it will *detect* them autonomously.

current approaches will never work.
“Jaywalking is permitted in London. In 1966, the police tried to crack down on it, but gave up after three months.”

People walk and cycle on roads by right, people drive under licence.

Jaywalking is not a thing in English law and Waymo must not change that.

Self-driving taxis are coming to London – should we be worried? | Jack Stilgoe
Waymo’s cars were first rolled out in San Francisco, but the English capital’s old roads, pelican crossings and jaywalkers may pose issues for AI, says science and technology professor Jack Stilgoe

*aesthetically* retro.

[the bulbous shape is, what, fifties? actual early portable iceboxes [esky or other dialect word] are more recent -- early 70s? postdating polystyrene foam -- and had boxy steel shells. Or were just raw polystyrene designed for easy moulding, still pretty square]

I tell you, I can't think of anyone accused of sex crimes who's surprised me. I don't know if this is an illusion generated by my bad memory, a reflection of keeping the thought "maybe this person is a sex criminal" open longer than most, or a genuine knack... but in any case I'm intruiged.

we only get to learn about an elite network with incredibly disproportionate and democratically unaccountable power because its members also happened to sexually abuse children.

maybe we should have visibility into similar networks even if their members don’t do that.

Not just digitized; it needs to be schematic and classified in order to be legible to the model. LLMs are like governments in this way; not very good at dealing with things that are outside their context.
