You’re not my delivery boy. You're my escort- I mean, companion! Also, I’m not as helpless as you think. I did give you a bloody nose,” Eve snapped, crossing her arms over her chest. “Are you sure you’re not doing this because Daniel and Nora made you?” That she was just some helpless girl who couldn’t protect herself! It seemed like this trip was just another delivery job to him! She WASN’T helpless, and most certainly was NOT a package.

Cookie prepared test tubes with different solutions, some of peculiar colors. Sage put the rod in one, then procured another rod and got another sample. He repeated the process until all seven test tubes contained her blood. “Take those four, put them on sample slides, and give them to Gene,” Sage said as he transferred four of the tubes to a different rack. Cookie did as she was asked. Aubergine watched her in curiosity, wondering what he was about to be tasked with. Sage explained while he palpated the area where Shallot had been clutching. “Gene, I want you to look at those slides with Noklopan microscope vision. I’ve treated the samples with a dye that makes certain proteins stand out. Tell me if you see anything bright pink in the first one, blue in the second, or purple in the third or fourth.”

The leaves of trees along the water’s edge are already turning. Being near so much moisture, and the cool air from the lake, stresses the trees out. It causes them to begin the process of senescence, the scientific word for the changing of the leaves. I feel in tune with these trees as I also find myself changed from stressors beyond my control. However, my transformation is not one of autumnal beauty.

Corben sagged his wide shoulders and smiled, just a little. “Not sure myself, Captain, I’ve only been around for a few hours, and I didn’t want to wander off in case you were early. Something about some local politics?” “Maybe,” Yana said. “It seems a bit early in the year to celebrate the Shift’s anniversary, but every place has its own date, doesn’t it?” “That might be it.” He glanced down the walkway platform, where a smaller group of locals made their way towards the city center. Three humans, a wheeled automaton, and a lifeform she couldn’t identify at a glance, chatting among themselves. The humans smiled; it was the only display of joy in the gathering that Yana was equipped to recognize. “Oh, right, the package!” he exclaimed, after a few seconds of silence too many. “Here.” He extended a glowing compad towards her, she placed her signature on it, and with a nod and a wave towards the ship, the delivery was complete. The ship’s gates opened, and boxes upon boxes covered in warning signs were carted away. “Don’t mind those,” Corben said. “They’re just there to make sure nobody manhandles the cargo.” “Mhm. So, is there anything else I need to do?” “No, that’s the transfer complete, Captain. Thank you for making the time.” She nodded and walked away just far enough to disengage from Corben’s immediate surroundings—a radius of awkwardness, as she saw it. Her compad buzzed, and she was glad to answer it.

The squiggle swells in intensity for a second, then disappears in a burst of light and an expanding ripple passing outwards through the system hologram, distorting it as it goes. I imagine feeling a shudder as it passes over us. Where the squiggle was a moment ago, there’s now a very crowded area of space. Over half a dozen flying wing icons pop into existence and almost instantly start moving in our direction. “We are being hailed,” Rondu says and turns to the side. “Who are they?” I ask, and feel a knot of worry start to form. “… a Dominion task force. They say they were on their way to liberate the Ontooloo family. I find this highly unlikely.” “Agreed,” Omuna says. “They’re ordering us to halt our progress and transfer the Ontooloos over to their custody,” Rondu continues. “No!” Vander says suddenly, startling most of his family. “They ignored me when I asked for help, now they want to take credit! Not a single chance! Get us out of here or I can’t pay you!” he says, directing the words towards Rondu. “In fact… I am requesting asylum with TLC, for my whole family!”

Aerith narrowed his eyes. "Is this anyway to talk to your mistress, Zeutherian. Do you think you're behaving?" Zippy's eyes caught on the simple lace beneath his short skirt as he shifted his legs. Aerith scoffed when he noticed, kicking her again in her silence as she soothed herself by committing the glance to memory. "Technically, you only said I had to behave after you took off the belt." He kicked at her head viciously again and she ducked. Realizing what she'd done she looked at Aerith with a nervous chuckle. His eyes stayed merciless as he muttered a familiar incantation and vines wrapped themselves tightly around her throat, spikes poking into the skin, threatening blood if she didn't get her act together. He summoned the leash and dragged her head towards him. She met his glare bravely. "No one ever said to stop behaving right now," he hissed. "Sorry, mistress," Zippy muttered bitterly. Aerith smacked her across the face, his nails leaving faint red lines across her skin as they hit her. She flinched despite how little pain the impact caused.

The only place that has strict rules and laws is Himmel. All weapons have to be authorized and usage of said weapons is prohibited. Makeshift weapons that also aid farm work and agriculture can only be utilized within work

I’m staring out of the view window at the endless high-density urban expanse, trying my best to will my body not to start sweating while I wear my now familiar business formal wear when the comm bracelet activates, nearly making me jump out of my skin. I activate it after taking a few seconds to calm down. “Yes? Who is it?” “Friend Jennifer! How is the day treating you?” comes a now entirely familiar voice. “Wul Pra? Oh, it’s going fine, a bit busy at the moment,” I say, trying to keep my voice neutral. The Kowellians have been nothing but amazing as our logistics backbone so far, even with the no-weapons restrictions on their ships. Wul Pra had once offered to forego said restriction, but I shot that down instantly. No need to risk it. “We’re seeing some activity, friend Jennifer. Is everything alright? Are you in need of assistance from us?” Wul Pra asks, and I cannot bring myself to lie to him, not after everything so far. “Uhm, yeah, we’re having a bit of a situation here in Sennetu-Tra, I’m heading to a meeting now to see where it goes.” “Oh? Will we be required to stay on standby for this? We can depart for Nuyanna now, if you like!” Wul Pra says, using the name of the planet instead of the continent-spanning city like everyone else usually does.

I'm not sure, I didn't read much of Daniel’s book about it. They weren’t warriors, I know that for sure. It was just a bunch of big guys hitting each other for a ball.” Big guys hitting one another was the closest thing they had in common with the Old World football team. If the group wasn’t starting fights with mutants, they were starting fights with each other.

"Less talking, more cleaning. Clock's ticking, slave." Zippy scowled at his non-answer, looking for something suitable. Her eyes fell on some rags and scrubbing brushes stored in a bucket. She was sure that Aerith had simply hid the mop so that he could watch her get down on her hands and knees for him. The thought deepened her frown, and she begrudgingly filled the bucket with hot, soapy water. She dragged her feet petulantly, swirling the rags and brush around in the water to further delay her task. Eventually she had to venture out of the kitchen, and into her nightmare's sightlines. He looked up at her, flipping through a magazine, and watched with a smile as she got down on her knees in his foyer. "Ah-ah," Aerith tutted, placing down the magazine and giving her his full attention. "Don't use anything abrasive on hardwood. Use the rags." Zippy said nothing, only dropping the brush into the bucket petulantly. She wrung out a rag, and began wiping the floor down in wide, sweeping motions. Aerith's gaze felt heavy on her as she served him. Zippy turned around to get to the far corners of the room, and maybe escape his scrutiny for just a few moments more. "Straighten your spine. This is your life's work, slave. You should ensure proper form while you do it."

19 November 1768 Jeremiah paused as he and Kitchi worked on building the fence that would mark the tract of land his family had purchased. He caught the look of concern on his new friend's face. "Not to worry, Kitchi," Jeremiah said gently. "I promise I will make certain no harm comes to you or your people." Kitchi studied him, the worry still visible on his bronze features. "I know," he replied. "Just as I have promised to protect you." Jeremiah smiled. In the month they had known one another and worked side by side, their trust and admiration had grown deep and steady. The sound of approaching hoofbeats drew their attention. Both men turned toward the trees at the edge of the clearing. Kitchi raised a hand as several of his tribesmen emerged and approached the fence line. "Hold," one of the tribesmen called out. The others stopped at the fence line, their eyes fixed on Jeremiah. The air grew heavy with quiet suspicion. Kitchi stepped forward, knowing he must translate. The leader of the party spoke in Algonquin, his tone firm and demanding. Kitchi turned to Jeremiah. "He asks what you are doing on our land." Jeremiah drew a slow breath before speaking, careful to keep his voice steady. "Tell him," he said to Kitchi, "that my family has purchased this land from the Crown. We mean no disrespect and no harm. We only wish to build our home and live in peace." Kitchi translated his words, speaking earnestly to the leader in Algonquin. The man listened without interruption, his dark eyes never leaving Jeremiah. After a moment, the leader responded sharply. Kitchi turned back. "He says the land cannot be owned," Kitchi explained. "It belongs to the people and to the spirits of those who came before us." Jeremiah swallowed, nodding slowly. "Tell him I understand," he said. "But I swear to you all, I will not drive anyone away. You are welcome here. This fence is only to mark where we live, not to keep you out." Kitchi translated again, his voice carrying sincerity and respect. The leader studied Jeremiah in silence, measuring his words carefully. Kitchi's voice lowered as he finished translating. The leader said nothing at first, but the weariness in his eyes spoke volumes. "Our people are fewer now," Kitchi added quietly, not as a translation but as a truth. "Sickness came with the traders. Wars followed the redcoats. Each season, there are fewer fires burning in our villages." The leader finally spoke again, his words heavy with bitterness. Kitchi translated. "He says promises have been made before. Always by men who said they meant no harm. Then soldiers came. Then fences. Then graves." Jeremiah felt the weight of it settle on his chest. "I cannot undo what others have done," he said. "But I will not be like them. My word is all I have to offer." Kitchi hesitated before speaking again. "He says some of our people will go west soon. Others will stay and try to survive among the settlers. We are being pushed into smaller and smaller places." The wind moved through the trees, carrying the sound of distant hoofbeats, as if history itself were pressing closer. Kitchi glanced toward the distant road, his jaw tightening. "The redcoats stay in our villages now," he said quietly. "They take rooms in colonial homes, demand food, wood, blankets. Some are polite. Many are not." The leader spoke again, anger threading his words. Kitchi translated carefully. "He says the soldiers do not see us as people. They march through our hunting grounds. They frighten our children. They say this land belongs to the King." Jeremiah's hands curled at his sides. "They have done the same to us," he admitted. "They quarter themselves in our homes without permission. They take what they want and call it duty." Kitchi studied him, surprised. "So you suffer under them too." "Yes," Jeremiah said. "And many here are growing tired of it. There is talk of resistance. Of standing against the Crown." The leader listened closely as Kitchi translated. When he finished, the man shook his head. "He says your wars always find their way to us. We are caught between crowns and colonies, though we chose neither." Silence settled between them, thick with shared unease. In the distance, the faint sound of a drum echoed from somewhere deep in the forest, a reminder of lives already under threat. Jeremiah finally spoke again. "If fighting comes, I swear it will not be against you. I will not raise a hand toward your people." Kitchi met his eyes, searching for truth. After a moment, he nodded. "Then we walk a dangerous path together, my friend." Kitchi watched Jeremiah as the words were translated, seeing more than just a settler before him. He saw the man who shared his food, who worked beside him without complaint, who listened instead of commanding. A good man. A rare one. When the leader finished speaking, Kitchi answered before turning to Jeremiah, his voice steady and sure. "I will stay," he said simply. "With him." Murmurs rippled through the small group. The leader studied Kitchi sharply, concern and disappointment warring in his gaze. "You would side with the colonists?" he asked. Kitchi shook his head "I side with justice. With those who are being crushed under the same boots that trample us." He turned to Jeremiah, meeting his eyes fully now. There was no hesitation there, only quiet devotion. "You fight the redcoats," Kitchi said. "So do I. Their chains are the same, no matter who they bind." Jeremiah felt something tighten in his chest. "You don't have to do this," he said softly. "I won't ask it of you." "I know," Kitchi replied. "That is why I choose it." The leader exhaled slowly. "Then walk your path carefully, my son. The world is changing, and it will not be gentle." Kitchi inclined his head in respect, but his place was already decided. He stepped closer to Jeremiah, their shoulders nearly touching, an unspoken promise hanging between them. Whatever storms were coming, they would face them together.
