There was a third scrapbook, and beneath it, a collection of report cards, drawings, mostly of hockey stick men, and some honest to god macaroni glued picture frames. Inside I saw a gap-toothed boy who had to be Justin. Another one had his twin Jess in it as well.

Silence fell between them, and though Yana basked in it, it soon became clear Rook could not abide a moment’s rest. “I took my exam three times,” they explained, out of nowhere. “First in my homeworld, then in the Kiran Bedi station, then in the Habitat.” Yana nodded, hoping the conversation would fall off again. “So, I failed the first one because I didn’t understand what they were testing. Then I failed the second because I didn’t read the briefing right. But I had a bunch of time to practice between stops, suss out what do they want from an officer, what qualifies as a good officer, that sort of thing. Then I passed my third test! Just barely.” They smiled. As far as Yana could tell, they were proud of this. “The Kiran Bedi station is several spikes away,” she offered, under quiet protest. “Yeah, there were a lot of those,” Rook said. “And my homeworld’s further away still.”

Soon be done and no doubt they’ll get to starting on the next.” A column of smoke blew lazily from Boulder’s lips toward the fire, the faintly blue smoke combining with that from the log, crackling and spitting in the grate. That would be the Puddlebottoms’ third. Families came large in the farmlands and, and Boulder hated thinking like this, but it was true, it was always worthwhile having more to spare. Life was hard on children. Get them past a certain age and they could expect a long life. Those early years, though? They could be harsh on families.

It is a school day and the mall is emptied of its usual teenage patronage. Now is the time for another species unique to the mall habitat; the dreaded mall walkers. They are a pack animal resplendent in their neon track pants. They cruise the climate controlled halls. These third space parasites buy nothing even though they have the financial weight of my entire senior class combined. If youth is wasted on the young then money is wasted on the old.

He wondered what sorcery had prevented him from seeing them before. No matter. He saw them now. Through clamoring nerves he drew, glancing at the others to ensure they wouldn't betray him. The enemy came on with confident caution. Cerel drew breath. Smooth as ice. He let it out, releasing his THIRD arrow before the first of the Kudrum had dropped. The fourth turned in surprise. Before he had time to react further, he too fell dead. The silence vibrated, stunned for a moment by the resonance of the bowstring. Amazed, Virgil and Weatherlin stared into the white-laced darkness. Cerel remained frozen, arm outstretched, bow bent and arrow nocked, looking for more. An ethereal snow-dust settled. Some weird worldbuilding today! I don't believe I've ever explained how people pay rent in the Tenement yet... Very curious what y'all will make of this 😄

From #Tenement, my dystopian mystery about people living in an infinite building.
“Noah, go check the slot,” my father told me. “Make sure there’s not any last minute quids.” The slot he referred to was a small horizontal opening in the wall by our front door, sealed off by a tarnished metal plate on a creaky hinge; a lever was embedded in the wall beside it. I pushed the plate open with my fingers, feeling around in the hollow space inside. “Empty,” I said. “Give the lever a pull, just in case.” I did, and waited for the telltale clinking sound. But I got nothing. “Come on,” I sighed, and pulled it again. I don’t know why my father decided I should be the one to do this. The Tenement hated me. Kazuo would have probably had better luck. After the third pull, I heard a clackety-clackety-clack inside the slot. I pushed the plate open and scooped out four quids—colorful little glass balls about the size of my fingertips. Quids were the primary form of currency in the Tenement. Every apartment had a delivery slot just like ours, and throughout the month, quids would appear there, generated by the Tenement as a reward for our good behavior. At least, that was what we told ourselves. In reality, the distribution of quids was notoriously unpredictable. This was, of course, how we paid our rent, though what the Landlord did with all those quids we sent him each month, no one knew. My father and many others theorized that it had something do with keeping the water and electricity going. How exactly that worked was never explained, but it didn’t matter. All we knew was we had to keep doing it, month after month, and not ask questions. Pay the rent or die in the dark.

Some worldbuilding. An ecological disaster cursed the land. The city couldn’t build outward to give people homes… so they built up. It was done in desperation, so it wasn’t an act of perfectly organized city planning, but it worked, so they could do better the next time.
The difference between the second and third level was level 2 originally had mansions and bigger homes near the center mixed with the cheap houses, as several wealthy folks were among the first to move up. It was a bold move the first time, and the city wanted to show how confident they were to the normal folk who needed to move up in vast numbers. As decades went on, most of the monied families changed location to the outer limits of the plate, wanting to get away from the commoners now that the point had been made, and their old lands were either turned into public spaces or government buildings. It gave the level a less organized structure, but I like to think the landmarks gave sections their own sense of identity. The south side had the park with the old manor in it, the northwest had the cathedral to the Earth God, the eastern edge had the college and so on. But despite the relocations, a few stayed in the middle of the city, and apparently Duretti was one of them.

The blond’s eyes flicked around the room, from one silent spectator to the next. “I didn’t hit him that hard,” he protested. “He’s only stunned.” He nudged the dead man with the toe of his boot. “Dorne. This ain’t funny.” Dorne’s head lolled on his neck like a broken doll. “He’s fucking dead,” someone else exclaimed. “He’s not,” the victor insisted. “He’s just drunk. Dorne.” He nudged him again, harder. The third nudge was more of a solid kick. “Dorne!” he raged, as if it was Dorne’s fault he was dead.

A third bottle was popped open, and another swig of harsh, burning liquor was slurped down. She hadn’t felt this broken or useless since the Blind Cliffs. But where she found strength in her anger then, she now only felt tired and depleted. She tried to think of that “happy place” Monty Kenko talked about and saw only an empty void. The same damned abyss that had been waiting for her ever since that awful day in Vigor. She fulfilled her destiny and had been waiting to die ever since. A dull growl rumbled through the palace. It sounded like thunder. Her head swayed upward toward the skylight where she saw only darkness. A storm was coming. Maybe the Fury God was angry with her? Isn’t that what Dinah-Celeste kept bothering her about? She should’ve been Ikari’s Champion according to her. “Then strike me down, asshole.”

Meeting Joni back in college had seemed to change that. My heart swelled at recalling how she’d looked when she walked into that classroom eons ago. Another lifetime, almost. Still on the austerity plan for ‘no one night stands’ even into college, I approached Joan Winters as though we could be friends. I commented on the team apparel she wore—she played for the university softball team—and she asked if I ever go to the games. I told her I prefer baseball, and when she gave me a crooked smile while sending a flat palm through the air as if to say, “You don’t know what you’re missing,” I agreed to go to the season opener. She was the catcher, and I couldn’t take my eyes off of her—even when she was sitting on the bench at the bottom of the third. We sat next to each other in that Intro to Composition class the rest of the semester, and I helped her with all her homework. In return, she got me into all the away games for free. After seeing her eyes light up when I surprised her at the first one, I had to be at every one.

No, what really got his proverbial goat, was the blatant abuse of local fly-tipping laws that he could, possibly literally, spend days cataloguing and investigating the people that had dumped their rubbish down here. At the moment, however, it wasn’t his job to do anything about it. But, later, he would perform his civic duty to the letter, the very letter, of the law.

I spend my morning instead applying a thick layer of black nail polish to my fingers. I do not care about actual style, but like bright colors in nature, the paint acts like a natural warning sign to my peers to keep away. That I can be dangerous. My black metal tee shirt and ball chain necklace creates a similar effect. My clothes are my armour. I finish by applying small amounts of gel to my hair, creating small spikes, completing the illusion of a fierce creature.

Fion had spent most of her life thinking balls must have been named for cricket balls, since they were lobbed at you rather violently and if you weren’t ready for them they could embarrass you in unpleasant ways. She preferred not to attend balls at all, not ever, but they were notoriously difficult to dodge. Also much like cricket balls, when one was approaching, everyone expected you to do something about it. “Oh but you must,” Eliza complained when Fion informed her that she planned to spend her evening not going to the End of Midsummer’s Ball.
