Ann Arbor doesn’t pick up Christmas trees but the Pioneer HS baseball team does as a fundraiser. Today is the day and Mia is enjoying the new things to sniff.

An update for those of you following the dispute between the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners and Sheriff Dyer: The parties seem to have agreed to a stipulated order that withdraws the requested TRO, cancels a 1/7 hearing, and extends the amount of time the county has to respond. #a2council

Neither of the two local independent bookstores I like have “Sula” in stock. I’m not going to ask them to stock it because I can’t guarantee my students will purchase books there but like wtf

A several people and orgs have said, the U.S. does not have a good track record in South America nor have its interventions ever led to peace and stability. Regardless of how you feel about Maduro, the U.S. strikes and activity in the Venezuela and the region ought to be disturbing in the least.

you don't need to add caveats agreeing that the head of state abducted is a bad guy before opposing abduction of a head of state by military force. If the rule was any head of government is fair game then the entire world would be a series of decapitation strikes and show trials in foreign courts.

all I’ve got is that the idea that you can commit any act of violence and say you were just executing a warrant is chilling and also common to US police

1. Maduro is not a good guy by any stretch of the imagination.
2. But capturing him through an extra-legal action that violates international law undermines any US credibility with Russia in Ukraine and China with Taiwan.
3. We have a terrible history with topping leaders without a post-war plan.

The Global War on Terror helped normalize & standardize extraterritorial operations against opponents for countries with the capability; this precedent certainly amplifies and reinforces that trajectory
Excited to see China substantially increase long-arm transnational repression citing the actions of the US as a precedent

Homicides are down.

Men eating entire grocery store rotisserie chickens are up.

Was it really worth it?
Homicides in Philadelphia drop to lowest level in 60 years
DA Larry Krasner and others attribute the drop to gun violence prevention efforts, grassroots violence-interruption work and supportive programs for young people.

The mayor is evil because he’s tall and spent summers at Interlochen?
#a2council IMO, there's nothing worse than being a bad poster, and creating a copypasta that starts off by saying you main op is tall and handsome is some bottom tier stuff.

Also I'm sorry, but before we can have this conversation, we all need to sit down and carefully untangle the marketing that has conflated every possible use of machine learning with ChatGPT.

And not in a "well you ignorant people don't understand the difference" way.

The confusion is deliberate.

Experimental evidence that students are more likely to contest grades when they are delivered by an evaluator with a female-sounding name.

"These findings suggest that women in evaluative positions face disproportionate resistance when delivering negative assessments."

I think it’s important to insist on recalling, at all available opportunities, that this was specifically an attack on a trans instructor over an assignment about gender. Neither of those details are incidental; they are the center of the story
If you’re wondering why your friends in academia are a little on edge right now, it’s because an eighteen-year-old who hasn’t done the reading, doesn’t look at the assignment, and has does no critical thinking skills more complex than “because I think it’s in the Bible” can literally end your career
