DHS is literally in shutdown right now because Democrats didn't go along with it
There is no easier or more important political position to take than to do everything possible to stop this. It will change our society forever, and Democrats are going along with it.

"Democrats are going along with it" needs a big fat fucking [citation needed] tag. They've literally forced a lapse in DHS appropriations right now trying to do anything they can to slow down ICE - and the reality is that there is not that much they can do!

FFS, Democrats are NOT going along with it.

This funding was included in the Big Betrayal Bill that literally zero Democrats voted for.

Imagine what could be done if all the hatred Leftists have for Democrats was instead focused on Republicans.

-but screaming on the internet at the people trying to drag us forward is more fun than actual progress, I guess.

Even this is a massive understatement of the actual costs, since all of those things require advance planning, paperwork, and (in some cases) scheduling document retrievals (often only possible during work hours). The cost doesn't have to be high in dollars to be a prohibitive tax on voters.
It costs $130 + a $35 facility fee to obtain a passport and an extra $30 for a passport card. In California, fees for certified copies of vital records are between $18 and $31 each. How is the SAVE Act not a poll tax?

you know, it still seems like it should be an even bigger issue that the president has been sending armed forces to kidnap and assault people in an ethnic cleansing campaign, with a specific geographic focus on regions that didn't vote for him in the last election

I feel this way about pretty much all vaccine-preventable infectious diseases. You shouldn't be allowed to dump cyanide into municipal drinking water and you shouldn't be allowed to recreationally spread viruses around shared public spaces.
My most authoritarian opinion is that the MMR vaccine should be mandatory, with only medical (not religious or floofy) exemptions allowed. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

I recorded this today, in Portland, Oregon, at a huge march to the ICE facility in SW. The crowd was full of cyclists who had ridden there in memory of Alex Pretti; members of several labor unions; and ordinary citizens of every age, including this little girl. So of course ICE deployed tear gas.

This story is absolutely gutting. Any decent person who was (somehow) contemplating eliminating USAID would first have asked: what will happen as a result?

Musk and the DOGE kids never did.
This enraging story about how USAID cuts that shutter schools and foster total desperation are *directly* forcing vulnerable Rohingya refugee kids into child marriage, trafficking, and slavery.

They are the raw human material that the likes of Epstein and Trump and Musk want to mine.
Trafficked, exploited, married off: Rohingya children’s lives crushed by foreign aid cuts
Severe foreign aid cuts imposed this year by U.S. President Donald Trump, along with funding reductions from other countries, shuttered thousands of schools and youth training centers in camps for Roh...
