A farm #pond we restored in 2014 showing multiple valuable habitats. Open water with submerged plants, a thick bed of Typha, lightly vegetated shallow shelving edge, bramble patch, woodland fringe, mini ancient woodland meadow (promontary on R) with early purple orchid. All this in a tiny footprint

No wild geese to chase today at Stanford Reservoir but a check in the hide found the Peacock #butterfly was still safe and soundly hibernating. Counts as a #Nortamptonshire record! @savebutterflies.bsky.social @butterfliesonfilm.bsky.social @stanfordbirder.bsky.social

I attended a Dark Sky event in Norfolk, the local police force had some specialists on crime prevention attend, who said the same.
Again and again...

Add your statement to our wall of pledges for #WorldWetlandsDay!

It is urgent that we raise national and global awareness about wetlands in order to reverse their rapid loss and encourage actions to conserve and restore them.

Stanford Reservoir - much better views of the geese flock from first light yesterday. 4 Tundra Bean Geese, 3 Pink-feet & 40 White-fronts all in the same field. Incredible to have these on the patch at the same time. Only the 42 White-fronts present this AM.

The 60-Year Sealed Garden
In 1960, David Latimer sealed a spiderwort sprout in a jar and basically created a mini-Earth. 🌿He only watered it once (1972) before sealing it for good. 60+ years later, it’s still thriving. Bacteria recycle dead leaves into CO2, keeping the ecosystem perfectly balanced

The flock in the field split when a helicopter flew over but the majority of White Fronts and the Bean geese disappeared leaving a few Greylag and one White Front to land on the water.
A wild goose chase indeed at Stanford Reservoir this afternoon. I suppose it's exercise though :-/

Column | Good news: We saved the bees. Bad news: We saved the wrong ones.
Honeybees have never been in danger of extinction. But scientists are finding that they can accelerate the demise of native bee populations.
