🍀 Wetlands are the lifeline of our planet, nourishing ecosystems, sustaining communities and fueling economies.

🌊 Yet, despite their critical importance, freshwater ecosystems are among the most threatened on Earth.

📢Feb 2 is #WorldWetlandsDay! A day to celebrate the world's wetlands, including bogs, fens, and swamps.

Many Ramsar sites are #peatlands but there are large gaps in global cover. For more on this issue, and on peatlands and @ramsar.org, see my new Peatpedia post: open.substack.com/pub/peatpedi...

Wetlands are the refuge from fire, the water filtration, the flood attenuator, the sediment collector, the biological community center.

Thank a wetland today.

Create a wetland tomorrow.

Close to 20% of KBAs are wetlands. These foster more than 4,000 trigger species, such as the vulnerable Lesser White-fronted Goose or the critically endangered Hooded Grebe.

Conserving these sites is critical for wetlands and all the species that depend on them.
