Yesterday marked a key day for KBA's expansion into new horizons. Alongside the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment and IUCN, we have officially launched the Arabic edition of the “Global Standard for the Identification of Key Biodiversity Areas”.

🚨2025 #RedList Update🚨

We have reassessed 1,360 bird species. Out of the 11,185 species assessed worldwide: 

⚠️11.5% are globally threatened.

📉61% have declining populations.

But restoring habitats will help put these species on a path to recovery.🌱

a. Identification of sites of importance for biodiversity to guide expansion of protected and conserved areas to 30% by 2030

#CaseStudies |💧The Nosivolo River is an AZE site for the CR 𝘙𝘩𝘦𝘰𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴, and a global KBA for 4 freshwater fish species. 👉The Nosivolo was also recognized as a Ramsar Site in 2010 – the 1st river in Madagascar to receive this designation.

📄 #CaseStudies | 👉A project to assess the conservation status and distribution of freshwater biodiversity in the Tropical Andes identified 86 freshwater #KBAs🐢 These include 26 AZE sites, and can serve to expand the Ramsar Site network in the region.

Tegucigalpa (June 25-27) hosted the 1st KBA National Workshop in Honduras. Led by Aves Honduras, the project will help identify key sites for biodiversity. Supported by @birdlifeglobal.bsky.social and funded by Global Affairs Canada through the Conserva Aves initiative.
