Higher ed policy at New America. Opinions = own. Working on fed policy re: parenting students and child care access. Opinions on lots of things.

Parent/worker/baker/learner/gardener who believes in the power of the people.
I guess I’m gonna go to work and sit through meetings and try to write an article about child care while thinking about ICE shooting people in the face and our govt kidnapping foreign leaders.

I guess that’s what I’m doing today.

A Black man named Keith Porter was shot and killed by an ICE officer on New Year’s Eve.

Marimar Martinez was shot five times by an ICE officer in Chicago who went on to brag about leaving seven holes in her body.

This is not new but it is expanding.
Your reminder that what happened to Renee Nicole Good is something that happens regularly in America. This is not new, but it is an expanded version of militarized people targeting Black people in particular.

From ICE detention to murder with impunity, we've been doing it. Now it's broadened.

Terrible slogan? Why, because people lack imagination about how things could be better?

Can’t afford healthcare, food, or child care programs.

Can afford a military that kidnaps foreign leaders, a domestic kidnapping squad emboldened to shoot people in the face on the streets, and for rich people to not pay taxes.

I’m glad to see Bill say this. But when after a century of just the type of abuse we saw today - relentless and cruel, ensnaring our children and intimidating our communities - young Black people said in frustration, anger, and demand for change “defund the police” - so many of you denounced them.

Can you accept - even w/o agreeing with all our positions - that Black people know profound truths about this country that are not on Schoolhouse Rock?

Now that the tactics they’ve used in our communities are becoming national policy, are you ready to concede that you need our “expertise” as well?

They shot an unarmed white woman in broad daylight.

Imagine what they’re doing to undocumented people trapped in ICE camps.

There’s sexual assault. There’s denial of medical care. There’s forced labour. There’s torture.

More than 30 people have died.

Abolish ICE.

You can feel like something is inevitable and still experience shock. Many of us knew something like this would happen, bc things like this have already happened, bc law enforcement functions with impunity, bc ICE kept drawing its guns on observers. But emotional and moral shock can still occur.

Be enraged. Mourn Renee. Demand justice.

But don’t be mistaken that a new line has been crossed- this is the 5th ICE caused death
in the last year, which doesn’t even account for in-custody deaths. They’ve been killing and will do it until they are defunded + abolished

Driver shot in Minneapolis is at least the fifth person killed in US immigration crackdown
A motorist fatally shot by an immigration officer in Minneapolis is at least the fifth person to die since the Trump administration launched its aggressive immigration crackdown last year.

Tonight, I was one of more than 200 people who gathered on Chicago’s North Side to mourn Renee Nicole Good. Several people asked me to publish my remarks from the vigil, so I’m sharing them here.

I’m not interested in these people having training. I’m interested in them not having weapons or the power of the state behind them.
The focus on training misses the mark. Yes, many federal agents are sloppy and unprepared, but years of organizing against police violence have taught me that more training doesn't stop violence. It just makes the death-making more respectable (sometimes) and more expensive.

This secret police force is brutal, indifferent to humanity, and acting with impunity. And the owner is on each, and every one of us to protest every single thing they do every single day, and whatever ways we can.

I cannot fathom having to pick my child up from school to tell her Your other parent was murdered since you saw them a few hours ago.
What a sad, enraging, upsetting day. I hope that child and her partner are somewhere safe and surrounded by loved ones.

kidnapping of immigrant community members. And 22 years too many of ICE existing.
January 8, 2026 at 12:50 AM
I have been sitting with all day, this could be me. This could be my child without a parent, because a regime hell bent on ethnic cleansing hired a bunch of white supremacists and emboldened them with hate, lawlessness, and weapons.

All on top of nearly a year of escalated terrorizing and…
You and your wife drop your 6-year-old off at school. You just moved here. You see ICE terrorizing your new neighbors. You film them, as is your legal right. Your wife complies with orders. She is then shot in the head. You still have to pick up your child later today.

This could be you.
