I'm mad about the shut down and worried about healthcare, but not letting people starve is a pretty good reason to cave on this bureaucratic fight, the more I think about it. So just say that: Republicans wanted you to starve rather than compromise, so we let this one go.

The Democrats' strategy in the shutdown was to extract concessions from the GOP, under the assumption that the GOP would ultimately feel pressure to reduce the suffering of their constituents.

The way to survive the next year or three with your sanity intact is to accept that the Dems are essentially powerless, the misanthrope GOP is running the show. You should assume every battle we stage for concessions will lose so that you don't go insane when it happens.
