The second #kakapo chick of the #kakapo2026 breeding season hatched this morning: Hine Taumai-A1-2026 on Ako's nest on Te Kākahu. We transferred the egg from Anchor two nights ago. This is Ako's first-ever chick, which is just a few hours old in this video. #conservation #birds #parrots

New Zealand has lost 29% of its glaciers since 2000

That means in only 25 years, we've lost almost 1/3 of our glaciers, that had been existent for millions of years prior.

Oceans continue to warm

🌿🔥 #NewResearch is revealing how and when NZ’s beech forests can burn. We’re supporting PhD student Georgia Stevenson, with Lincoln University researchers, to test beech litter flammability in the field. These are the first experiments of their kind in any NZ native forest type.

I've written a blog post about using @gbif.org to geocode localities (for some reason biodiversity people call this "georeferencing" 🤷‍♂️). Post is iphylo.blogspot.com/2026/02/gbif... Been a busy week prepping for O Week next week. I made a “Can I trust Wikipedia?” Game, a poll about Wikipedia and AI, and two displays of Wiki-based games for students queuing for their ID cards. And a stack of “what can a Wikimedian in Residence do for you?” flyers. Phew, roll on Monday!

I think we've progressed to level 6 on the basis that the wind gusts are most definitely felt by all & I've got concerns "slight non-structural damage occurs", I'm worried my fence might blow over. It did in the 2013 Matariki storm & this one seems to be approaching similar wind speeds. #Wellington
She's a windy night in #Wellington. Instead of playing the "wind gust or earthquake?" game, we've progressed to playing "if this wind gust WAS an earthquake where on the EQNZ "felt it" scale would it fall?". Where I am, we're currently experiencing house shudders at "felt it" level 5. 💨🍃💨

With the help of Claude Code I have resurrected a tool to geocode localities using @gbif.org. If you have a locality such as "Cambodia: Ratanakiri Province, Virachey National Park" rdmpage.github.io/gbif-geocoder/ will search for specimens that match that locality and display results on a map.

Currently feeling very aggrieved on behalf of Filemón Lozano y Lozano, a Mexican botanical collector who worked with Cyrus Pringle. Variously described as "helper" or "travelling companion" & is generally not listed as a co-collector on Pringle specimens. Added to #Wikidata & @bionomia.net
