The real purpose of “herd immunity” was to serve as justification for inaction, letting Americans die for the economy.

That ideology—and it is an ideology—has been carried forward into Trump 2.0.

Anyone else noticed how Nazi rallies get the go-ahead fairly easily from state governments, then the horrified public reaction is weaponised to pass anti-protest laws, which are then used to quash anti-genocide dissent and justify police assaults on small brown women? You picking up on this, too??

The Online Safety Act has made going online even more dangerous. Google is now warning that as Britons turn to VPNs to avoid the act, there's been an explosion in scam VPNs that sell data or provide it to state actors.

Naturally, that would includes data on (and access to) minors.

The essential item here is the TV crew.

We need to understand that the administration's policy is driven by an optimization function that weights aesthetics over everything.

To be powerful is to be seen being powerful.
A Black Hawk helicopter. SWAT teams repelling to the roof. 300 agents. Flash-bang grenades. A TV crew.

“It’s 20,000 of them running through my house like we got Saddam Hussein in the closet."

For all that, fed prosecutors filed no criminal charges against anyone who was arrested.

Stunning report.

The persuasiveness of this argument depends entirely on people being completely ignorant of anything that has been published in the New York Times at any point in the last 20 years.

Like all elites when the unwashed have the temerity to call them out, they talk to us like we’re stupid.
The emails that you’re seeing now are news in themselves, but that’s because of how they’re coming out—a congressional committee released them—& the context in which they’re being viewed. A guy emailing a reporter talking about old girlfriends or saying someone is “dirty” is not a whole news story.

People think "politics" is what you say, but politics is in fact how you wield power. In that sense, driving a car is one of the most profound ways to reveal what your actual politics are.

How people drive reveals the sickness at the heart of our society: wanting power, but not responsibility.
It just needs to be way easier to lose your license and your car for reckless driving, because a few months of major societal disruption 5 years ago taught people that driving in such a way that kills others or themselves is nbd
so uhhhhh is anyone going to do anything about the epidemic of drivers just blasting through red lights these days? @timdonnelly.com investigates: nygroove.nyc/why-does-no-...

With current pledges, the world's on track for 2.6°C of warming in 2100 compared to preindustrial levels.

10 years ago, before the Paris agreement, it was 3.6°C

20+ years ago, we thought it would be 4-5°C

So 2.6°C is better, but the problem is that climate impacts are way worse than we predicted.
World still on track for catastrophic 2.6C temperature rise, report finds
