Hi, wave of new people (exodus from Twitter / X?). Academic and research interests in the bio.

Warning: this is the least exciting account on Bluesky. Cakes and pastries, rural walks, exploring Sweden & Norway, apple and orchard observations, weird stuff the cat does, text adventures, um that's it?
The 13th of February is my mom's birthday.

This summer past I scattered the remainder of her ashes on the Malvern Hills, in a line of sight of where the family orchard once grew.

Happy birthday, Jill.

A couple on the other side:

Him: This is like when we rode the log flume with the kids at Alton Towers. Do you remember?

Her: I remember the egg sandwiches you made us because you were too tight to pay for food there. They were rank.

On the back road bus, which is almost aquaplaning in places. The driver is noticeably clenching the steering wheel tensely as we approach each lane-wide puddle of uncertain depth.

Behind me, an elderly couple are discussing where to source their ham for next Christmas.

Last week one of my students complained to me about how they feel like AI is being forced down their throats “by their other professors” “not English” (☺️) and I was surprised to hear how much other disciplines are embracing it and even using it to make their teaching materials

(1/3) Asked what my highlight of 2025 was.

Thought about this, and it has to be having a long and pleasant conversation with Maria Sjöholm while she was putting the bins out, utterly unaware of who she is, or who her husband (Tony Iommi) is.

Context: Worcestershire village where I went to a...

Right. Popping to the village store to buy some eggs, and chat to the assistant about apple varieties and locating abandoned orchards.

NO ONE is allowed to resign from the government until I return.

(UK government, that is. The US government can [redacted] as far as I'm concerned.)

Tally ho.

Glanced at the Guardian to see a piece that's *exactly* in the centre of this week of the course I'm doing.

"Rising GDP continues to mean more carbon emissions and wider damage to the planet. Can the two be decoupled?"

Economic growth is still heating the planet. Is there any way out?

Checking a webcam to figure out how cold Stockholm is.

Appears to be people walking/skating off Norr Mälarstrand. Though that's not technically the sea, it's still connected and is on the ferry route (obvs not today) to Vaxholm?

I'm assuming it's cold, then.

I'm fascinated to watch & time people eating in restaurants, 54 seconds is the record for an entire Sunday roast at a Toby Carvery, the guy was like a pelican, just shoving it in and swallowing. There was no chewing.

Jealous that it touched her son
In ways she could not
I wait, hiding in the woodlands
