Wondering how much snow has fallen? ❄️

Here are the highest snow depths from all 4 nations over the past few days👇

I had to shovel a path to the area of garden Zig remembers as covered in grass, so he can go and pee on snow over grass not snow over gravel.

Apparently the front guard thing is missing so they are limping on to the next station to assess. This isn't over. (also, what on earth did they hit to take out the front guard thing? an aggressive snowdrift?)
These are not the texts you want from your son after getting him (overcoming SOME PERIL) onto the correct train this morning.

I can't imagine my wash tent has survived this heft of snow. Last time it sprang back upright once I had cleared the roof. Until observed, it is Schrödinger's wash tent.

Also fretting about my coal tit friends, but I'll see them soon.
I was supposed to move back to my garden room tomorrow, but my utterly lovely hosts/owners of this rental won't hear of me leaving while the snow is still so bad. I love them.

The cricket though, eh? Why couldn't they have done this four tests ago etc

Look at Fergus being brilliant! I had no idea this was a thing. Zig is too old and too small to do this, but there is a link with info further down the thread.
Our Fergus has given blood again this afternoon. His donation could help up to 4 dogs. The @PetBloodBank are usually short of serum negative blood like his.
If your dog is 1-8 years old, 25+kg and likes meeting people could you help too?

As we near the end of the wonderful fortnight we've stayed in this place, I thought I'd show you one wall of the sitting room, which includes Fire, History and Death.

Am now firm friends with the owner and we are going to continue being so. Bonus friend!

Right we can all relax now because my daughter has successfully changed trains and is now moving south according to plan. Oh and Gertie made it to the station and back in snowstorms. All we need to do is exactly the same tomorrow and all will be well.

Next Christmas I'm organising their travel.

I clicked with some trepidation, expecting the usual bromides. But this excellent piece by none other than Elizabeth McCracken is full of wisdom and practical thoughts. @elizmccrack.bsky.social www.theguardian.com/books/ng-int...

I know I wang on about Lev's Six Things a lot (not as much as he does, mind, but then it's his (6) thing(s). Relentlessly cheery and interesting. Which is exactly what we need.

World Cup, June: someone offers Trump the honour of being goalie for some exhibition celeb penalty shots. He can't resist. At the last minute, the entire Venezuelan team walk out, each holding a Very Special Football. The crowd goes wild.

(Yes it's too soon. But it's also too much today.)

Every train update screen I look at seems to be saying 'it's FINE we're all running on time' so pending snowmageddon overnight (still v possible), I have to dig Gertie out and navigate down a single track untreated lane before I get to the Big Road, in pitch black at 6am tomorrow. stay tuned etc

On the windward side of the house, the snow has striated showing the flurries coming in.

can't see the hills now and the flakes are as big as feathers

Morning. The severe weather alert doesn't even kick in until noon. Chances of getting to a train that runs early tomorrow morn? low I'd say. Luckily our host is completely brilliant and we can stay as long as we need to.

Because I went to sleep early last night, I was awake to hear this. 57 mins of utter delight. How come I never knew they started in Britain? Glorious.

I'm not saying we've spent all our time doing holiday jigsaws, but I'm not not saying that. On and off. That's it now tho. Unless the snow gets so bad the kids' trains are cancelled and they're stuck here all January (we're hoping)

You're all lovely. I'll be asleep soon so am telling you this now. Thank you for your company this year and may we continue the daft merriment in the next. The older I get, the more I'm convinced daft merriment is one of the important bits of life.

Asking my kids if they need new phone cases because they are always dropping them. Immediate outraged denial of "I hardly ever drop it!"

Under questioning, each admits to dropping it several times a week. Can't remember when I last dropped mine. Normals are ... different

A week almost gone from the fortnight we have here in a lovely, huge, warm holiday house, and I'm starting to realise the normality of my last 6 months are not what I want to call normal. Best realisation: this enormous kitchen is the same size as my extension will be! Not planning on wall oven tho.

A rather lovely walk, when I discovered the Spey hiding the far side of a fence. With a mossy tree and an outraged duck. There are 2 kites circling low over the field behind us. You'll have to trust me on that.
