Look, I’ve had a lot on my mind preparing for my final Sundance, and somehow I didn’t register until yesterday that there’s a John Wilson documentary in the program, so time to upend my schedule.

I don’t know which I find more annoying: a) that there is a non-playoff college football game taking place after Jan. 1; b) that one of the participating teams has a losing record; or c) that it is called the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

First piece of 2026!

For @poynterinstitute.bsky.social, I talked to a bunch of terrific critics—including @anniezaleski.bsky.social, @sepinwall.bsky.social, and @jasondashbailey.com—about the pains and pleasures of creating top 10 and EOY lists.

Very disappointed with myself that I didn’t think to watch ROCKY yesterday—the exact 50-year anniversary of the movie’s central Jan. 1, 1976 fight—instead of today.

It sounds like comically specific hyperbole but it is verifiably true that in the same year Elon Musk predicted fully autonomous taxis serving half the nation, what actually happened was his chatbot became a pedophile

I keep reading people who have a wildly different interpretation of the final scene of MARTY SUPREME than I do, so I guess I need to watch again to make sure I wasn’t hallucinating [spoiler].

In the Roller Coaster poster, there's a character that looks like a mashup of Floyd (a pink bass guitar player) and Zoot (a blue saxophone player), but the result is...not a Muppet. And whatever this character is, they've seen some shit.

Got to hand it to Trump, giving an insane interview about his health is really tuning in to a lot of the country’s New Year hopes and dreams.

If they ever make a movie about Elvis Costello set in the present day, please consider Allan Havey as Pete Thomas.

Re: previous repost, I know it’s low on the list of things lost with the disappearance of print newspapers, but I miss comics pages as a way to start the day with a smile. There were a few masters of the form creating in the 1990s.

Preparing my preliminary Sundance schedule, and a lump came to my throat as I noticed that, at long last, the online program catalog does not alphabetize "The" titles under "T." Just a little farewell gift to me.
