I used to be a professional online community builder (1995-2020). I have eclectic interests: coffee roasting, kludge DIY, 16thC Germany, History of Surgery...

Now, I just have opinions: all of them are wrong, but some of them are useful. Willing to learn.
Just some things on my mind.

This!

We have Hmong folk in the Central Valley of California.

They are part of OUR community, so ICE pound sand.

No other justification needed.
ok hmong people in st. paul deserve to be protected from being kidnapped regardless of whether they or their grandpa fought for the US in vietnam and regardless of whether they are “good” and “upright” citizens it’s kidnapping it’s wrong. i get why people are bringing this up but.

Another multi-skeet thread torched because tablet/mobile platforms don't operate as though I might spend time in another tab/app or so to research the draft I am creating.

I have vast amounts of secondary storage. Why OSs don't drop an app state as a fall back if working memory is overwritten?

How we respond to the most dependent members of our society reveals how we think about community, care, accessibility, and humanity. This is what I mean when I say intolerance of children works to your own detriment.

A lot of people forget how in 2004 the Bush regime kidnapped the democratically elected President of Haiti, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, and dumped him in Africa.
Is there any modern precedent for abducting a head of state?

Plenty of examples of coups, assassinations and domestic trials, including show trials, but this is like a Crusader Kings plot.

These are historical voting patterns

(Dem candidates do not park in our homes and communities 24/7 and we Black voters still over stand the assignment)

Continuing to do these mental gymnastics to excuse folks voting awfully the moment we do not center whiteness or maleness is exhausting.

I love Pixel Fireplace! it’s my favorite fire sounds.

Plus, when playing old Christmas music, it sounds like record pops.

So glad it’s on steam! Now I can archive the original EXE.
Pixel Fireplace is only $0.99 in the Steam Winter Sale.
The cheapest it's been!

There are few personal fundraisers on here for me, but this is one of them. About two weeks ago, my husband’s best friend was diagnosed with cancer and his fiancée, my bridesmaid, has had to drop everything to take care of him. That includes work (which denied her leave). Help them out, please.

Wow, as someone who supports Propublica and donates to support their journalism every year I am surprised and disturbed to read this.
1/ At bargaining yesterday, @propublica.org management said that they should have 100% discretion to replace workers with AI and would not commit to labeling future AI-generated content.

Mayhem indeed.

Just saw another commercial for it so let me say again:

Mr Clean Magic Eraser is a 10,000 grit melamine sanding sponge. Don’t use them to clean anything in your home. It’ll fuck up your paint and your surfaces and your finishes.

It’s also bad to touch or breathe around, so yeah.

This is actually important for two reasons.

1) Just recognising implicit sexism when it comes up, either in you or others.

2) Recognising the power of framing on social media and how it can override context and even common sense. Next time you're asked to join a dogpile, perhaps consider this.
Okay, this is a fascinating case of social media priming.

So, this creator, Sarah Velush, basically has a channel devoted to deadpan lifestyle humour (a la Chef Tova).

But because a progressive account takes it literally and says... this? Hundreds of comments assuming she's an evil tradwife.
I want this woman thrown in prison for at least a decade.

This is The 0th Law of Online Community Management:

Your ToS/community guidelines apply to you and *all* of the company.
Regardless of user behavior it would seem to me that if you’re trying to create a healthier ecosystem you would simply not ever engage in behavior like this? You would instead demonstrate the standards you’re asking people to live up to?
