Earlier this week, we covered @propublica.org’s NYC office in quotes from folks who signed our petition for a fair contract. Our supporters' message is clear: Management needs to meet our demands for a more equitable and transparent workplace now.

Today we delivered to senior management in NY a petition signed by 1,300 ProPublica readers, donors and supporters, as well as fellow journalists at peer newsrooms and former ProPublicans. It’s clear that we have wide support for a fair contract NOW.

NEW: L.A. Times journalists just voted to authorize the newsroom’s first open-ended strike.

Eighty-five percent of the @latguild.bsky.social voted to support the strike. Just over 200 workers — 98% of members — took part in the historic vote.

A beloved colleague who was terminated last year through management's vague and inconsistent disciplinary process regularly brought apple cake to the office on his birthday. As we did last year, we are marking his absence and calling for job security protections with apple cake in our NYC office.

I have no inside info on @karenattiah.bsky.social's case. But I know Post employees are part of @postguild.bsky.social, and their contract allows the union to challenge "disciplinary action on the basis that is was taken without just cause."

So what's just cause?

Why is it almost all decent news organizations, even the nonprofits, are so anti-union and so resistant to fairness?

Unions are the lifeblood of workers rights, and ProPublica is one of the few news outlets that does deep investigations into the structures of power we are all living under. I don't sign many things (nobody got time for all those emails)but I signed this.
