How about we shut down the government for this very popular and specific goal and then, hear me out, we hold out for like a month and a half and then, ok this part is important, after a watershed election where we ran the table, ONLY THEN, fold and don't get the one thing we said we wanted.

"How could Dems cave like this after last Tuesday's victory?" But it wasn't a victory for Schumer. His candidate -- the Trump-supported one -- lost. The jubilation and hope folks feel about Mamdani? Chuck feels the opposite. To sum up: he sucks.

Do the right thing @ossoff.senate.gov and @warnock.senate.gov. Stand and fight now - it will only get harder if you cave again.
I don't know what the Senate is going to do. But if they do in fact fold in exchange for nothing, they will be living up to past performance. To expect the Senate to carry out the will of the American people is to misunderstand why it was created in the first place.

I immediately texted this to somebody and then realized I surely, surely must've fallen for a fake screenshot. But no, this is where the NYT is. Jaw dropping, even for them.

I am so upset.

Last week Time Magazine solicited a piece from me on Zohran Mamdani & anti-Muslim hate. I pitched a framing re the dehumanization of Muslims & how Mamdani’s inclusive, socialist campaign in its content resists that. They agreed. I wrote the piece. 1/
To be asked to write about racism only to be racially aggressed in the editing process is a new level unlocked I have to say.

I would note that this disdain points in one direction. These legacy media outlets have been quick to cover and hype tea party protests, anti-mask/anti-vax protests, and countless other examples of what they call “real Americans” engaging in protest.
For sure some of the legacy media outlets are downplaying the protests because they’re aligned with Trump, but I think an even bigger factor is how many elite journalists have a patrician disdain for the idea that politics can happen in the streets and not just the CNN green room.

The Mainstream Media Is Catastrophically Failing To Meet The Moment
Earlier today we wrote about Trump's extraordinary admission that he was basing military deployment decisions on old Fox News footage and lies from his advisors. But there's an even more damning story here: how that revelation almost never saw the light of day because of journalistic cowardice. The smoking gun quote came from Trump's phone interview with NBC's Yamiche Alcindor:

I think this comparison is largely right.

Yes, it’s a replay of McCarthyism’s ugliest aspects but that was fueled by a widespread sense that the country faced dire external dangers while this is about a deeply unpopular president’s grudges.
This is the biggest attack on free speech since the McCarthy era but it also has significantly less popular consensus behind it than the second Red Scare. It's being done on behalf of a minority faction led by the most unpopular president in modern history. Organizing against this can win.
