Things I’ve read this year:

1. The Line of Beauty. Hollinghurst’s Booker Prize winner. A haunting look at the intersection of gay life and a political family in 1980s London.

2/ Why is there a reluctance to engage with the possibility that the main selling point for many voters when it comes to a racist & immoral candidate, IS the racism & immorality? What if their concerns include views hostile to democracy & certain ethnic groups in the US?

Candlemas is celebrated 40 days after Christmas. It commemorates Mary and Joseph presenting Jesus at the Temple in Jerusalem.

Candlemas services traditionally include a procession of candles. Hymns may be sung and candles are lit to remind us of Jesus, the light of the world.

This is networked incitement in action. Once Raichik names her target, her followers roast them publicly and call up the target's workplace or family members to make bomb threats and wish physical harm. Serious and specific threats can lead to shutdowns of workplaces and schools out of caution.
Chaya Raichik, who runs the social media account Libs of TikTok, has spent the days following Alex Pretti’s killing doxxing ordinary working people — teachers, nurses, school board members — for speaking out against federal immigration officials or expressing sympathy for Pretti.
Libs of TikTok is doxxing teachers and nurses who support Alex Pretti or oppose ICE, trying to get them fired

The TACO cycle:

Markets want to price in TACO. But TACO only works if Trump sees stocks tank.

So we get a loop: Trump does things → nothing happens (markets already priced in TACO) → that emboldens him to do more → until markets start to think he might not TACO → stocks fall → TACO is restored.

The govt lying about the killing of a U.S. citizen at the hands of the state, is by itself, a front page a story, worthy of drumbeat coverage, resignations, and impeachments.

Nonviolence is, in fact, working. This administration is weaker than it was a year ago. More and more of the public is becoming galvanized against it; its agents are being impeded.
Do you honestly think people in the civil rights movement and other nonviolent movements faced no violence themselves? They practiced nonviolence because it works, because the oppressor wants a shooting war, which is the war it will win
How's your non-violent working Mr Gandhi stancil? They will kill each and everyone of you right if they had the chance and you will still be writing Kumbaya.

It is of course not an exhaustive read of the abolitionist groundwork sticking out in this moment, but we tried to recognize a lot in a cohesive way, from Minneapolis and from other cities. (@mskellymhayes.bsky.social's wonderful words about Chicago, where people also ran towards ICE, are linked)
Community members in Minneapolis have built a vast rapid response network; patrols; witness and response to ICE presence; large-scale food deliveries; and care webs for those who are left behind by ICE. Many of these systems sprung to life along the paths laid down by the George Floyd uprisings.
Minneapolis’s 2020 Uprising Laid an Abolitionist Groundwork for ICE Resistance
The George Floyd uprising laid foundations for the politicized networks of care that are organizing against ICE now.

Calls for people to film events in Minnesota reflect good intentions, but intention without process produces unusable evidence.

Evidence collected for awareness & evidence collected for legal accountability are not the same activity. They require different standards, safeguards, and infrastructure.
This is going to make them even madder. Good.
