Hey all, if you know anyone who loves family history research and has Scottish roots, please let them know about my Edinburgh research trips. The next one is coming up in June and still has some space left.
Just booked my flights to Edinburgh in June! Super excited to meet up with a group of family history researchers June 13-20 to help them deepen their knowledge of their Scottish roots. There's still time to join me! scottishgenealogy.ca

I am so angry about this.
We here in Utah voted overwhelmingly to un-gerrymander our House districts. The Legislature ignored that and made the gerrymandering even worse. They were sued and lost. The judge ordered them to comply with the law. And so now they are adding two more justices to the Utah Supreme Court.
This hasn’t received nearly enough attention:

Republicans just passed a law to pack Utah’s Supreme Court after it ruled against their congressional gerrymander.

Cox could appoint two more justices before the court hears the GOP’s latest appeal to preserve their gerrymander

Weather hitting hard in Utah.

(Not actually joking. The lack of snow this year is going to be very bad for water reserves next summer.)

I am having a completely over-scheduled January. One of the things I am using this January to do is plan how to not be over-scheduled next January.

If I want a cozy leisurely January in 2027, I have to block that out on my calendar now and arrange my work differently.

Utah's legislative session is underway. While it can be nerve-wracking, here are some things you can do:
📌 Stay informed with the ACLU bill tracker

📌 Come to our Read-In at the capitol on Feb. 13 to show our legislators just how many of us oppose censorship laws.

I just had to re-start my computer and it closed all my tabs.

I instantly feel less overwhelmed.

Note to self: sometimes keeping tabs open creates stress. You have other ways to track what is important. Some of those tabs were things that OUGHT to be let slip through the cracks.

Art and writing is a form of protest. It is a form of empowerment. It is part of being human.

That is why you write when the world is on fire.

But the bigger reason that you should write and make art, is that your work is someone else's respite.

You don't know who they are. They may be someone in the future. But if you have escaped into a book, or a painting, or a TV show... Someone created that.

You can do that for someone else.

If you're a writer, wondering why you should bother writing with the world on fire. It feels like it's not important, I need you to understand that it is.

Even if it is just because it keeps you moving forward? Even if it only brings YOU joy, that gives you energy to fight & survive.

Read this. Save it as a favourite. Read it.

Years ago my doctor said that the hardest part of my intense depression was how *convinced* I was by what the filter of depression told me. together we found something that the filter couldn’t deny, and I used that as a tool.
Watching doc about resilience that reaffirms many changes I made last few years to my mental outlook (I read a LOT of brain books). Brains are hallucination engines. If the story is the world is shit, everything is fucked, brain reframes every interaction this way. It impacts behavior; shuts us down

We like to endlessly dunk on bad takes and narratives. But all that does is promote more of the bad take.

Make your own good take. Promote that.

This is one of my favorite approaches to examining media, to ask what it was trying to do and whether it succeeded.
I've learned how to better critique a piece of media by asking the Roger Ebert question about what exactly a piece of work is trying to be, and what's it's trying to say? For all the hiccups and episodes that were all at least 15-20 min too long, it succeeded, to me, at what it set out to achieve

Characters on screen saying "give us the room" and making everyone leave so they can have a private conversation.
I get socially anxious about the people and tasks that were interrupted.
#FilmSky, a quick question; what is the pettiest thing you have had to be annoyed at a film? I ask because I am watching The Gift from 2000, and the main character does divination with Zener Cards, which are not the same thing as Tarot at all. Why go for a more boring looking option?
