I simply support the coercive power of the state being used to prioritize an urban form that is slightly less preferred but has vastly better externalities. The people may yearn for the suburbs but they also yearn for sports gambling, no matter how bad either are for society.
There is a fantasy - and frankly, you can see this fantasy all over my replies for the last day- that everyone wants to live in New York, everyone wants to walk everywhere, and that if we'd only build these environments, the problem of sprawl would vanish. It doesn't really seem to be true, though.

I have to think these rulings are the only real defense of our current system of state legislatures drawing maps for first-past-the-post congressional seats, where effectively a state can draw their entire congressional delegation to reflect the statewide vote

This is Muriel Bowser's administration from top to bottom, agency after agency. A culture of impunity can only flow from the top and Bowser makes clear that subordinates can get away with any corruption and abuse they want.
Renata Naylor reported “rampant sex discrimination” by her boss at DOES. She says agency leaders failed to address her complaints and fired her soon after.

Now she’s suing the District. Full story:
Department of Employment Services Manager Fired After She Alleged Sexual Discrimination and Retaliation
Renata Naylor accused Daniel King of persistent sexual harassment and discrimination. She was fired soon after.

immigration is good, in fact so good that the US should be setting up an Ellis Island style paperwork clearinghouse at every port of entry and just signing people up until there's no one left trying to come. no more quasi-legality or tolerated illegality at the whim of violent state caprice
"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

On the first episode of the new @cuneytdil.bsky.social & @trsdc.bsky.social podcast (which is great)- Sherwood describes @mayorbowser.dc.gov as a "moderate progressive". I think the record shows she's a conservative Dem/ liberal Republican at best (in mold of Manchin/ Bloomberg). Evidence ⬇️

There are any number of reasons to not support Josh Shapiro for president when he runs, but the fact that he is willing to back Pennsylvania out of RGGI has to be close to the top. The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative has been a wildly successful mechanism for funding green power in the Northeast.

Just a note that the US passed landmark civil rights legislation enforcing the rights of disabled students to reasonable accommodation. This is a form of segregation. And segregationists like this also tend to believe in other forms of segregation.
A lot of education discourse is at root an inability to decide whether the purpose of our education system is to 1) teach material and measure learning 2) reward students who work hard 3) separate the smart kids (destined for smart guy jobs) from the dumb kids (destined to serve the smart guys)

This is a story of such astonishing corruption. Slumlords have their mouth to a spigot of public money, misuse it wildly, and then demand law changes for bigger paybacks. Meanwhile the Bowser administration is shoveling them money, failing to obtain federal funds, and taking away renters' rights.
“DHCD is a mess.” The agency forfeited roughly $35M in federal affordable housing assistance.

Part of that money went to a “credit swap” used to bail out a well-connected developer. Full story:
How DHCD Forfeited $35 Million in Federal Assistance for Affordable Housing and Bailed Out a Well-Connected Developer
DHCD Director Colleen Green failed to disclose the loss of funding when asked during a D.C. Council hearing earlier this year.

Getting really fucking sick of “I, a Democrat who won with 52% of the vote, will honor the wishes of the voters by being a Republican 48% of the time” schtick from these idiots

Every single corner and every place two different materials meet is another potential leak
One way to reduce condo defect liability: stop forcing architects to design buildings that leak. HCD’s “objective design standards” guide *encourages* making building envelopes more complex, heightening leak and therefore defect lawsuit risk cao-94612.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/documents/Ap...

So many people were detained extrajudicially, were tortured, or died because of Dick Cheney. You can't get to the danger we're in now without everything he did. The weapons he helped forge are ones we need to take away from U.S. presidents forever.

Dante is completely right - DC Council should be passing a law ensuring the 3rd Amendment rights of everyone in DC, so that any establishment can clearly refuse entry to federal agents acting without a judicial warrant
“DC should absolutely pass a policy like Chicago just did, creating ICE-free zones. We should not be allowing ICE agents to use establishments in our communities, even for restrooms or breaks.” — Dante O’Hara

more than anything @syllytyler.bsky.social's attests to what a power trip MPD and Metro PD are on having their big bad fed buddies on the streets with them. they are utterly sure they can violate rights with impunity, going so far as to say so while they're arresting people
Tyler Sylvester recounts his experience being arrested, with officers telling him “We’re taking you to Donald Trump.”

DHS tried to kill Philip Brown while MPD was illegally collaborating with them. It's bad enough when DC's own cops are trying to kill DC's people, but they're working with the feds to do it too now and this is the consequence.
WILD story. A DHS officer shot at a man he thought was fleeing (a judge dismissed all charges). Bullets went into the driver's side window, through his jacket collar, and into the empty passenger seat. An MPD cop on the scene says he was ordered not to put it in the police report.
A D.C. task force shot at a driver. It’s not in the police report.
Neither D.C. police nor the Department of Homeland Security have explained why the Homeland Security agent fired his weapon.
