The whole POINT of Romeo and Juliet is that they were way too young to get married. Girls didn’t normally get married at 13 back then! The audience is supposed to be uncomfortable with the whole thing; Shakespeare did that on purpose.
one of the things "everyone knows" about european history is that sometimes princesses got bethrothed or married as children and assume it was like that for everyone, when it definitely was not and people mostly got married in their 20s just like today.
One of the dumbest times I went viral on Twitter was for a thread about this and there were creepy people in my mentions for days. So: fun fact, the average age of a bride on her first marriage in 18th-century England was 26.
