Imperial Russian/Soviet History Ph.D. Done the communism-and-fascism thing, which has been more "relevant" than anticipated (or desired). Real loves: opera, philology, and storytelling ancient, medieval, and modern.
Agree. But by "weird and idiosyncratic" I very much hope we are talking home-baked manifesto weird and idiosyncratic, not the darker potential of Reichstag fire/Kirov assassination weird and idiosyncratic.
Presumably we’ll learn more soon enough, but Kirk is such a bizarre target—a dime-a-dozen little grifter—that I tend to suspect the motive is going to turn out to be something weird and idiosyncratic.
Don't be surprised if whoever killed Charlie Kirk has no coherent political ideology, didn't do it for any particular reason, and doesn’t fall anywhere neat on the left/right paradigm.

I am very here for this whole thread.
I am at war with my 9yo.
He asked me to guess how many Nerds were in a box of Nerds and I did and asked if I was right and he said “well, well never know” and I said “of course we can know.” And he said “I’m not gonna count them all.” And I said: “you don’t have to” and explained MATH.

This is what I’ve been saying for a long time now. There’s no blue state vision for universities and learning. Just the neoliberal “return on investment” model and the right wing “centers of indoctrination” model.
The most immediate problem for the professoriate right now is that its vision of the university has no political advocates. Democrats really don't care about anything but universities as job training centers, and are proposing massive budget cuts at the state level dailybruin.com/2025/03/13/u...

Your average hen actually has the same degree of socio-economic awareness as your average Republican functionary of 2025. But considerably more empathy.

Yes, we're living The Wonderful O. Minus any laughs.
Perhaps no one bothered to spend 10 seconds figuring out what dismissals made sense (if any) and which did not.

It’s amazing to me just for how long @sarahkendzior.bsky.social has said that this is exactly what was going to happen. And said not with vague ambiguities. Just wrote substacks and whole books describing these moments in advance.

We all could/should have known.
Our criminal president is literally breaking up the federal government and selling it off for parts.
This is almost every major federal building in DC, and even includes the HEATING PLANT that supplies steam and cold water to government buildings.

Ah yes, the glorious intellectual tradition of determining who is "not fit” to have a job, reproduce, live… And without even a footnote crediting any Nazis, tsk.

So, just over the course of the past week, Canada is: 1) the country I will now have to go to get a damn flu shot; 2) a country with whom we are in a trade war; 3) a country against whom we are going to start an actual war - all of it for absolutely no fucking (reality-based) reason whatsoever
