My nephew is 25 and is a functional, successful young man. He has multiple spinal fractures requiring implanted hardware and fusion. He can walk fine for short distances, he even lifts weights, but long airport distances cause severe pain. He still does it bc he doesn’t want these optics. Fuck this

I knew a psychiatrist who observed part of the problem: "Mothers love their sons and train their daughters." Daughters who are uplifted by their Moms to become their own person are likely mourning the lack of men who would appreciate them.

With regards to less sex and actual loneliness, women are experiencing these things, too. Women may be more likely to have friends than men, but women are still getting lonelier. Women struggle with dating. The newer male struggle is expecting but not having someone to do your laundry for you

My sense is that the “male loneliness crisis” is not really about addressing men’s emotional needs but rather the relatively newfound absence of having someone to perform domestic labor for you quietly in the background now that there is a longer gap between your mother and your wife doing it

Painting in progress …

I like to paint my skies first using big strokes. Skies look better messy so it’s better to get them out of the way first.

U.S. military spending is set to hit a record $1 trillion.

Roughly half of defense spending goes to private contractors that routinely price-gouge the government.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon has failed seven straight audits.

This is the military industrial complex on steroids.

This ridiculous new post by Strong Towns correctly identifies a problem - we build too many failing transit capital projects - and completely misses the mark with its proposed solutions - stopping federal funding for them and instead making projects small and phased.
Are Federal Transit Grants Hurting, Not Helping, Public Transportation? | Strong Towns
Three case studies reveal how top-down funding creates rigidity, waste, and systems that cities cannot afford to fix or abandon.

It is just deeply weird to me that Musk and others like him are worried about white people becoming a minority. Why the hell should I care if the world, or specific parts of it, have more people with darker skin than mine than they do people with the same color skin as mine?
Musk is just straight up white nationalist now.

Healthcare is not a consumer product.

America needs Universal Healthcare.

I love reading this. Indeed, those were the days. There was some weird ass reproductive kitchen table science going on in the 80s. Subversions, inversions, and fuck the patriarchy.

A reason I love the history of lesbian turkey baster networks in the 80s (besides that I'm the product of one) is that it's a story of taking a science that always had this end goal and totally subverting it. The eugenicist origins of such ideas and technologies don't always determine their use.

I honestly don't want to make dinner to Netflix sludge, I want to make dinner to some middling 90s movie where if I look up I'll see great production design or Joan Cusack give a line reading they should teach in schools.
