Something I've been thinking about a lot lately is how when a driver does something wrong, the public and media don't smear all drivers as reckless assholes. But when a cyclist — and especially an e-biker — does something wrong, all bicyclists get attacked and blamed.

For @msmagazine.com, I wrote about the WNBA and the issue of pay equity. By the time the WNBA was only two seasons in (1999-2000) the average NBA salary was 58 times higher than the average WNBA salary. Twenty-six years later, the gap has jumped to 116 times higher.

I know I yell a lot about the language used in media coverage about traffic violence, and I want to reiterate that there is a reason why: We have studies showing that the language used can affect perceptions about how these crashes are viewed!
This is really cool research to see because I am consistently annoyed at how immediate local news coverage of traffic violence rarely, if ever, looks at the systemic factors that could have played a role, or the changes that could have prevented the crash. That is usually saved for follow-up pieces.

The International Olympic Committee is set to ban trans and intersex women from competition. This is despite the fact that for 20 years, the IOC has allowed trans athletes to compete and only 1 has ever competed and none have ever won a medal.

I finally started reading When Driving is Not an Option by @nondriver.bsky.social and something I love early on is the term "driver privilege." I may fight against car dependency, but I still have the option and ability to drive, even if I choose not to. It's important to remember that.

This is the main issue I have with so much of the coverage around e-bikes. It's not that there aren't legitimate issues. But there is a panic around e-bikes and crickets regarding the daily toll of cars. And that's because the harm of cars is just accepted. It's baked into our society.
The deference we give to drivers is astonishing: speeding, blowing through red lights, crashing without a whisper; yet we jump on non-drivers the moment they step out of line.

remember that they are not helping, they are simply removing the responsibility from themselves and placing it directly on those they should be protecting.
