Designer Acid FC (weareacidfc on IG) was very good to highlight this same philosophy in a recent post about their collab with Leeds:

I’ve seen some disappointment that it would appear the Sounders primary kit this year is going to be boring but to me a primary kit should always be boring. Just be the main colors with maybe a little pattern and I’m happy. Get weird with the other two.
