In addition, the membership of KDP was disproportionately composed of US-born Filipinos who tended to be more interested in domestic rather than homeland issues. Thus, the demographic composition of KDP also defined its framework.
Antonio was a student activist in the Philippines. After his arrest at a demonstration in front of the US embassy in Manila during Vice President Spiro Agnew's Philippine visit in 1969, his parents pressured him to move to the US.
He was able to migrate through the family-reunification provision of the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act. Upon arrival, he immediately joined the KDP. During our interview, he reflected on the primacy given to the issues of Filipinos who had settled in the US alongside the overthrow of Marcos since the organization's inception. He considered mobilizing Filipinos on their concerns as workers and minorities as both ideological and instrumental:
We needed to organize Filipinos on the basis of their problems here and strategically you can't say the solution is revolution in the Philippines. That won't be enough. That's part of the solution. But even if there's a revolution in the Philippines, their problems here of discrimination and inequalities still have to be resolved. And for that, the context of your analysis and proposals or resolutions has to be based on the United States. It is not dependent on the Philippine situation. ... We would organize Filipinos on their] issues in the United States and then win them over to the national democratic position in the Phil-ippines.... [Our goal was to] create a real left-wing, if not socialist position, in terms of their concerns in the United States... like labor, discrimination,
gender, race.
