Trumpeter here. Any reason why I can't cheer up sad war relatives and patriots by playing The Last Post on Remembrance Day using slide trombone instead of the usual boring old bugle?

Always important to put up proper safety signage near a working site…

This 'men at work' sign was placed here as a joke by some of the divers during the filming of the BBC Chronicle, a four-part documentary about the recovery of the Mary Rose in the early 1980s.

Dad’s books are full of empathy, common sense, and a healthy suspicion of the powerful. But at its heart his work is also about how systems keep people poor while pretending it’s their own fault. So I hope Kemi’s taking notes as well as reading the jokes.

I inherited my mother's bagpipes but was too embarrassed to practice because I've never had lessons. But the lad next door has started learning the drums, so I play at the same time as him. I learn from YouTube. I told his parents how he inspired me to learn.

As a composer and conductor of music for film and TV it irritates me that violinists obsessively over-use vibrato. If I want vibrato, I will advise on the score or verbally in rehearsal. Don't add it unless you're instructed.

Five years ago today it seemed that the golden age of naval idiocy had disappeared forever.

That was before the Venezuelan patrol vessel Naiguatá managed to recapture some of this spirit by fighting - at least at that point - the dumbest action of the 21st century.
