I'm gonna say something controversial but... I miss cable. I miss being able to put a channel on the TV and have it change shows. Even the commercials for some reason I miss. Like im missing out on society.

This is funny to me because I believe movie theaters are possibly the most obsolete and secretly unpleasant entertainment institutions in our society and I don't mind watching them fail.

“The number one issue was affordability” “But a very close second was data centers & the concern around them just sucking up the #water #electricity, land—and not really paying any taxes”

Just renewed my #ICBC car insurance for a year, cost me all of $1477. That's $80 cheaper than last year, which was cheaper than the year before. Public auto insurance is a wonderful thing! Here's the 10-yr change in auto insurance costs by province from StatsCan. #bcpoli #cdnpoli

Besides the obvious social, environmental, and ethical issues, I worry that we're about to get so much AI-generated slop that it will overwhelm the physical infrastructure of the internet. You think web page loading is so slow now, just wait til a million times more junk is flowing through the tubes
I'm also pretty confident I got a ChatGPT peer review recently. We're approach the singularity: nothing but AI reviews of AI written articles published to feed the publish or perish system.

#Springsteen - a really great movie.

I saw Springsteen in Stockholm in 1981; a truly legendary concert that lasted for 4,5-5 hours!

I slept in a queue outdoors for a couple of days to buy tickets - pre-internet era (winter).

I would love to do a class on Bruce Springsteen’s America (the article author teaches one at Princeton).

His songs helped rear me in 1980s midlands Ireland too. Another fine motherlode of toxic, repressed masculinity.
The culture of working-class masculinity that surrounded these jobs could exact a price, too:
“a deep attraction to silence, secrets and secretiveness,”
"the hard blues of constant disaffection”
“that the dark thing in you is barely restrained.”

We're booking hotels in Spain right now and we're choosing lovely boutiques with all the room amenities you could reasonably want mostly in the 100-150/night range. The most expensive was Barcelona, which has a significant tourist tax, and that ended up being about 250/night. Canada is nertz.
A friend is coming from Europe to Toronto in a few weeks (not peak anything) & trying to book a hotel. Found a middle-market hotel downtown for $395. That is bonkers. More expensive than London or Paris in the summer. Toronto needs a whole bunch of new hotels. Maybe dead condo mkt can pivot.
