I hope someday we defeat fascism and in the far future, No Kings Day is celebrated as a federal holiday, and little children leave out dance mixtapes and cookies for the Resistance Frog, who leaves pocket Constitutions in their shoes.

Jeffries on the arrest of Don Lemon: "The Trump administration has systematically targeted the free and fair press, because they want to intimidate America and oppose anyone who is not willing to bend the knee to their extremism. We are not going to be intimidated."

Just did a press ridealong commute in an away-from-home rapid response network with good press disclosure policies, and the world didn’t end, no one was doxxed, no identities were revealed. I did spend a lot of time lost. It can be done!

This happened to me yesterday. Two ICE officers abruptly blocked a freeway entrance, got out and illegally threatened me with arrest. All on video, thanks to a journalist in the backseat filming the entire thing. Press makes us safer.
Just thinking of how many ways a few commuters having journalists with them would help.
- The journalist can literally be there when ICE/CBP gets out of their SUVs and starts their action. There's no "OK, what happened before the person with the camera showed up?"

Here’s my advice. Also, if you’re not comfortable or sure, just say no. That’s fine! The problem is people trying to promulgate codes of conduct under which NOBODY is allowed to interact with press. That’s counterproductive - in general, respectable mainstream outlets have a vital role to play.

If you honestly think that journalists covering protests makes protesters less safe, then the arrest of a journalist covering the protests should make you say "Great, one less of those dangerous people on the street."

This is where the LARP hits reality. You KNOW it's bad a journalist was arrested.
January 30, 2026 at 3:47 PM
Schrodinger's Journalists are both agents of the government out to dox all the activists, who could never be known any other way, and, somehow, also part of the movement if the government does what they asked for and makes a journalist stop covering the protests.
January 30, 2026 at 3:45 PM
I'm sorry but you don't get to claim to care about a journalist getting arrested for covering the ICE protests if you support the "no journalists allowed" rule. Like...what? You got what you wanted, one less journalist covering it.
I don't know how to make you understand that Don Lemon is a warning shot

And what about THIS? Why would having anonymous self-appointed leaders with zero accountability be SAFER than normal group organizing with bylaws and accountability?
For all we know, the people who made the decision to help ICE get what it wanted are actually ICE agents themselves. They could easily have set up a rapid response signal chat to keep tabs on activists. "No one can know who we are, or question us, it's not safe" would be perfect cover.

What you need to understand is that I kind of can’t. I’ve been blocked out. I can try to do other, similar-ish things but this nonsense is making it much harder for me to touch the grass I desperately want to touch. It’s frustrating!
Just keep doing what you're doing irl.

OUR SAFETY COMES FROM OUR NUMBERS, NOT OUR ANONYMITY
A Minnesota woman observing ICE agents in her car was cornered on one-way streets. An agent approached, called her by name—citing facial recognition. Days later, her Global Entry and TSA privileges were revoked, with no explanation.

THIS. Minneapolis Rapid Response not only did what ICE wanted and made Stancil stop following them, they handed Trump a pretext for cracking down even harder. If they kicked a lawyer and the press out, because they want total secrecy, they must be plotting terrorism, he'll say.
It drives me nuts that groups all about legally observing and reporting, act like they are doing something wrong and have to be sketchy and operate in secret. You are doing a legal thing! don’t obey in advance and start acting like you’ve already lost your rights!

What happened to Stancil is so triggering, because it's exactly like what happened in my own local group. People who got positions of power because they volunteered for them when the group had like a dozen people thought that meant they were unaccountable rulers for life, even when someone got hurt.

Federal agents arrest Don Lemon over Minnesota church protest.

This is fascism.

The former CNN anchor has said he was not demonstrating, but reporting as a journalist, during the interruption of a service inside a St. Paul church earlier this month.

If you're okay with ICE, you need to get a new moral compass. The murders, assaults, kidnappings, disappearances are un-Constitutional, illegal & violate human rights. BUT it's
the daily instances of child endangerment and abuse that should stop EVERY person in their tracks. DEMAND AN END TO THIS!

The United States is not actually in a constitutional crisis. Our Constitution works just fine.

We are in a crisis of character — where nearly every single person who has sworn an oath to uphold our Constitution and enforce the law lacks the courage, moral fiber, and decency to do what is right.
the president of the united states should not be allowed to personally loot the treasury to the sum of ten billion dollars and that this is not resulting in immediate, unanimous impeachment is a dramatic indictment of what has become of our political system
President Trump has filed a lawsuit against the IRS, in which he demands that the IRS, which he as president controls, pay him $10 billion.

Whoever kicked Will Stancil out of these networks is working for ICE. They may or may not be formally employed by ICE, they may or may not know that they are working for ICE (& vice versa), their ideological loyalties may or may not be to ICE. But they are working for ICE and doing what ICE wants.
It appears to be an irreversible decision and I’ve been notified by private, anonymous messages, so there’s not really any kind of internal dialogue or appeal process I have access to.

Will Stancil is a litmus test for whether or not you understand how to build a strong and effective movement for political change.

If you care more about the cool kids' club zeitgeist than about what he's actually accomplishing for the cause, then you're a wrecker putting your clique over results.

Stancil raises an important point—rapid response groups are large enough to need bylaws and to hold votes on policies. It makes no sense to have them be governed by the admin of a signal group just because they got there first.
The local rapid response policy, which I first learned today when I was permanently removed, is “No press allowed ever.” I just think this is incredibly short-sighted and almost intrinsically self-defeating. Who are we observing FOR?

like, you generally can not run a very public operation that consists of "explicitly film adversary while personally on scene" and "make lots of noise to alert potential victims of adversary" and have conventional opsec against said adversary and that's before " recruiting is a QR code we give out"
