My first grader (a US citizen) came home from school crying because a friend from class (also a US citizen) hasn’t been coming to school because his parents (one of whom is not a citizen) are afraid of ICE.
Little kids don’t have concepts of racism and xenophobia. That has to be taught. Or imposed.

It's pretty sad now that I think about it. Cajuns maintain some pretty strong links with the international francophone community (especially with Quebec) despite the discrimination campaign against them back in the day. That kind of solidarity doesn't exist with old Spanish Louisianaians.
Yeah I would say Louisiana Martinezes are the whitest latinos in this whole country. They even pronounce their Spanish names wrong to get away from it. Massive divide between the 99% anglicized descendents of Spanish colonists and the modern Hispanic immigrants who mostly came after Katrina.

It struck me how banal the guards were in their cruelty there, and how there will soon be more, bigger prisons like it.

An actual full-blown police officer walked up to me to tell me how ICE guys need to go to prison and how he had to step in and comfort people who had narrowly escaped them.
