I haven't finished Les Mis yet but I get the sense that Hugo thought that Bonaparte was preferable to the Bourbons
So much of "Les Miserables" was Hugo saying "We needed the French Revolution to deliver power to the people, and also Emperor Napoleon was super-rad (*shrug*)" In fairness, Hugo was probably a weird crank.
