On a lark I started watching Gundam 00 again after not having watched since it aired back in 07-08 and wow it seems more relevant to today with all the conflicts and such.

Also how even with all the weird gn drive stuff still feels like the most grounded, both tech and politically.

I hope this is a big bullhorn to Arianespace and the EU to get moving on development of Maia/Prometheus and something bigger launching before 2030. This is embarrassing being this far behind.

Having all affordable launch capacity be in control of Musk is irresponsible and dangerous.
This whole heap is gonna go public soon. So he made twitter investors whole with AI venture money and soon he’ll make the AI investors whole with public equity market money, on the back of an enterprise the US government won’t allow to fail.
A memo just went out to employees at two of Musk's companies: SpaceX has acquired xAI.

Exhibit G for why it's insanity to build your entire economic wellbeing around a piece of corpo software they can and will eventually abandon.

And why there is a moral imperative to use open source software, even if it's rough at first. Because it can never be taken away from you.

Reading this thread, there is an even simpler reason why I like the Mamdani approach.

He treats being Mayor as a job with deliverables, vs other politician treating it like an avenue for self enrichment and engaging in the bare minimum of what is needed.

He actually has had to work for a living
Something that this really throws into sharp relief for me is the difference between this and how way too many—if not most—Dems in leadership treat us as voters. Which is to say not as citizens and participants in the process but as passive checked out consumers
The City’s Budget is our future. And you deserve to know how it works.

I wonder with the threats to Canada from another angle. The Thiels and Musks convincing Trump this is for the survival of the United States in a ice cap melt off.

The Oggalla Aquifer is looking to be depleted by 2050 and get worse by the inevitable dust bowls.

Something that burns me up.

I have stuff for job boards set up to focus on stuff in the Seattle area, but it keeps refusing to keep it in Seattle proper.

I need to be within the transit net. Stop sending me stuff for Bellvue and Redmond. They may as well be in another state commute wise.

I remember when I had bottom surgery in 2019

Out of pocket 5K, insurance paid 40K.

Hospital funny money number, 900k.

There is a special place in Hell for whoever at hospitals and insurance companies created this racket.
so, today I got the surgery center where I got my deviated septum fixed to send me an itemized bill so I could submit to my FSA for reimbursement

my out of pocket cost: $473

what my insurance paid: $4258

what they tried to charge my insurance (not a misprint): $173692
I was at an event yesterday where Rand Paul spoke via video and talked about how great it was to send ACA money "directly to the people" so that they could work collectively to get better deals on health care.

Oof owwie oof this just described my career
If I wanted to trap an autistic person in their job and extract the maximum value from them for the minimum pay and supports, I would:
- hire them and tell them how much I need them
- wait for them to learn to love the job, earn people's trust and have an impact
- start taking supports away

My only hope is it ends up like Myspace, and these guys all lose a fortune and other sites come to dominance with a userbase that hates the GOPs guts.

If these groups had cross site links and some sort of federation model to help fund it, would be the second coming of gawker.

If it had decent search, would also obviate the need to have to play nice with Google and Microsoft's AI monster that doesn't even send traffic anymore.
If you have an extra $10 a month to spare, here's a list of worker-owned cooperative news sites you might want to support:

• 404 Media
• Defector
• The Flytrap
• Flaming Hydra
• The Appeal
• Aftermath
• Racket
• Hell Gate
• The 51st
• The Colorado Sun
• Range Media
• Discourse Blog
• Pop Heist

If this happens, it will be the end of non corpo chat and non corpo forums in America. There is no way for the small web to survive this with what the law wants. And by proxy would also end all non corpo affiliated open source dev.

It has to be stopped.

Reading this stuff and thinking of my media diet, I remember folks giving deus ex mankind divided shit in August of 2016 for being unrealistic in countries deporting folks to places like Oman, detransitioning folks (in game putting bioprinted bits in against consent), and general mistreatment
Israel pioneered this tactic a decade ago: deporting 4,000 asylum seekers to Uganda and Rwanda, where they faced horrific conditions and were often funneled into deadly trafficking networks.

I investigated this shadow deportation system for @newrepublic.com in 2018: newrepublic.com/article/1488...

I dislike genAI for most use cases, but I find it kind of funny that most people don't know you can run autonomous.

And I can see smaller more targeted models going into edge intelligence, even if chatGPT implodes.

Same as any other AI winter, the useful stuff becomes boring and normal.
When they shutoff the LLMs some people's emails are gonna be like "me client, me want deliverable, you make good, you incorporate brand strategy"

I will use this whenever somebody says ask chatGPT. It doesn't know this will kill people in special ways and take advantage of folks who don't know it isn't an AGI
After asking ChatGPT what to eat instead of salt, a man slowly poisoned himself over course of 3 months and gave himself a psychiatric illness that was common in the 19th century, according to a new medical case study:
