I remember when I had bottom surgery in 2019

Out of pocket 5K, insurance paid 40K.

Hospital funny money number, 900k.

There is a special place in Hell for whoever at hospitals and insurance companies created this racket.
so, today I got the surgery center where I got my deviated septum fixed to send me an itemized bill so I could submit to my FSA for reimbursement

my out of pocket cost: $473

what my insurance paid: $4258

what they tried to charge my insurance (not a misprint): $173692
I was at an event yesterday where Rand Paul spoke via video and talked about how great it was to send ACA money "directly to the people" so that they could work collectively to get better deals on health care.

Oof owwie oof this just described my career
If I wanted to trap an autistic person in their job and extract the maximum value from them for the minimum pay and supports, I would:
- hire them and tell them how much I need them
- wait for them to learn to love the job, earn people's trust and have an impact
- start taking supports away

My only hope is it ends up like Myspace, and these guys all lose a fortune and other sites come to dominance with a userbase that hates the GOPs guts.

If these groups had cross site links and some sort of federation model to help fund it, would be the second coming of gawker.

If it had decent search, would also obviate the need to have to play nice with Google and Microsoft's AI monster that doesn't even send traffic anymore.
If you have an extra $10 a month to spare, here's a list of worker-owned cooperative news sites you might want to support:

• 404 Media
• Defector
• The Flytrap
• Flaming Hydra
• The Appeal
• Aftermath
• Racket
• Hell Gate
• The 51st
• The Colorado Sun
• Range Media
• Discourse Blog
• Pop Heist

If this happens, it will be the end of non corpo chat and non corpo forums in America. There is no way for the small web to survive this with what the law wants. And by proxy would also end all non corpo affiliated open source dev.

It has to be stopped.

Gotta stop being depressed and get back in the design game. There is cool stuff to do. Western Alliance Robotics is doing big fights in Seattle Cap Hill in November and I want to make something for it.

I had so much fun with 12lbers

Reading this stuff and thinking of my media diet, I remember folks giving deus ex mankind divided shit in August of 2016 for being unrealistic in countries deporting folks to places like Oman, detransitioning folks (in game putting bioprinted bits in against consent), and general mistreatment
Israel pioneered this tactic a decade ago: deporting 4,000 asylum seekers to Uganda and Rwanda, where they faced horrific conditions and were often funneled into deadly trafficking networks.

I investigated this shadow deportation system for @newrepublic.com in 2018: newrepublic.com/article/1488...

Mississippi got blocked because of their UK like age Verification law and all my homies are switching to VPNs.

Not a hell hot enough for the GOP using kids as a justification to try and lock the Internet down

I dislike genAI for most use cases, but I find it kind of funny that most people don't know you can run autonomous.

And I can see smaller more targeted models going into edge intelligence, even if chatGPT implodes.

Same as any other AI winter, the useful stuff becomes boring and normal.
When they shutoff the LLMs some people's emails are gonna be like "me client, me want deliverable, you make good, you incorporate brand strategy"

I will use this whenever somebody says ask chatGPT. It doesn't know this will kill people in special ways and take advantage of folks who don't know it isn't an AGI
After asking ChatGPT what to eat instead of salt, a man slowly poisoned himself over course of 3 months and gave himself a psychiatric illness that was common in the 19th century, according to a new medical case study:

Guy Gives Himself 19th Century Psychiatric Illness After Consulting With ChatGPT
"For 3 months, he had replaced sodium chloride with sodium bromide obtained from the internet after consultation with ChatGPT."

Just got me some really cool servos and a controller from Waveshare. Looks like they are already doing tariffs if you order from them direct they charge so much less than amazon. No suprises

I got a dumb idea with cable drives that I want to show off soon that take advantage of their torque sense
August 7, 2025 at 6:18 PM
All this tariff and data manipulation stuff in the US is making me painfully aware that most people even corpos aren't aware of just how much stuff only works because free trade.

And that it's going to take decades of smart little guys having to work around the edges to make it less bad.

Great thread, and why credentialism is dumb and the current pipeline for tech is setting ourselves up for preventing real skills from developing.

Also how jank ass windows can be and how frustrating proprietary evaluation software is.
I regularly bleat into young people's ears that there was no goddamn "tech career track" until recently. All the most senior people you know came from some weird shit. Our Deputy CISO ran a college Helpdesk. They came up from the bottom. Every single one of them has a different story. Relate to it.

I'm sitting here and wondering at that sort of spend, this guy would be better off buying a really really nice GPU and running a local instance. Would pay for itself in two weeks compared to this spend.

So not only is he an addict, he's a whale for corpo tech.
If somebody said these things about cocaine or alcohol, people would stage an intervention, stat

With the move to private space, grimly think this was inevitable. Folks go to the moon not to learn about earth, but to get the He3 fusion fuel and water for building crypto and AI training farms and military infrastructure

no place in the universe capitalism doesn't despoil.
Remember that NASA was only able to *start* because the rich were being taxed at 90+% marginal rates.

Now, *you* pay a greater percent of your income as taxes than any billionaire.

You're just not gonna get NASA back without billionaires paying taxes again.
