As an editor, I advise every author that includes HP references in their books to cut them. you don't need to do this, and being cutesy about it just means you knew better but did it anyways.
Man do authors think this is cute and quirky?

I remember a Cracked article that pointed out kids have been doing "memes" since before we even had the internet. People in the comments are pointing out "Kilroy was here" is a meme, which has been around since at least 1940.

Not only is it not a problem, this has been around for AGES.
Sometimes people are like "aren't you worried about the kids and their nonsensical new brainrot memes"

But like, the thing is, I can still spot a member of my internet generation by how they respond to "badger badger badger badger"

Playing with language and rhythm is fun, it'll be fine!
One of the things we've enjoyed the most about the six-seven phenomenon is the way it comes with a gesture, which we've also seen represented in emoji form as:

If I assign students a reading from Proquest Ebook Central via my university library, they immediately see an AI "Research assistant" that offers a 1-paragraph summary of the 15-pp chapter, plus "key takeaways" & "concepts."

There's even a handy "copy" button to past that info into your paper!

Folks might not know a lot of people are getting *very* upset that the materials they request are not available in the libraries/archives they're requesting from.

We're getting lots here at the Library of Virginia: requests of documents likely surfaced by large language models that *do not exist*.

Ideology as aesthetics strikes again.
@drkath.bsky.social studied this very question and found that yes Times New Roman is perceived as more conservative and sans serif fonts as more liberal- (likely because they are seen as less traditional and more modern):

Maybe this is a conversation we need every 10 yrs in a consumer-driven capitalist society. Purely transactional relationship is an inappropriate model for ed & for healthcare too. It’s also anathema to religion, despite the “prosperity gospel” charlatans. What makes us human isn’t measured in ROI.

This entire grift relies on convincing people that they don't know how to do the things they have always known how to do, and ironically, if it works, we will, in a very short amount of time, forget how to do all the things we have always known how to do.

Winter is one of the best times to educate people about car-centric policies because when it's snowy you can clearly see how little our cities care about anyone not traveling in a car. Even if you're not some activist, someone walking in winter can appreciate how much an unplowed sidewalk sucks.
This was a choice, not by the person walking but by the decision makers who refuse to prioritize them.

Amazing how this keeps being relevant.
What’s so, so fucking stupid is how often these dickhead techbros with too much money, who’ve never been told once that they aren’t as smart as they think they are, are trying to take SOLVED PROBLEMS and attack them from first principles - with zero knowledge of, or interest in, the subject matter.
remember that weird little Titan submersible that imploded, killing some billionaires last year? well, the US Coast Guard released more documentation, including photos, so let's take a look! 🧵

Really important thread 👇, to which I would add that we need to consider overlap of 1.) endowment managers of the NYU model, 2.) owners of EdTech platforms for student surveillance discussed here, & 3.) private equity capture of NCAA football undergoing chaotic privatization.
Two articles that explain what weird vision the Chronicle class of higher ed executives is chasing everywhere all at once in the new dispensation.

1) Everyone wants to be the SEC, now that the NYU model of growth via real estate speculation, fed-funded research, grad-degree retail sales has failed

The SEC model - aggressive, loss-leading investments in athletics, the abandonment of any kind of commitment to inquiry, the roll-out of new (automated, quietly implemented, algorithmic) censorship regimes mediated by enterprise software…that’s all now VERY visible locally.

Heartbreaking. The University of Nebraska will terminate its entire Earth science department.

One of the country's most successful and respected geology & climate programs: gone.

When ideologues & politicians are threatened by the very act of studying climate change, I wonder: who of us is next?
It's over.

Despite the fact that the academic council recommended against it, despite the fact that the program brought in more tuition than it cost, and despite the fact that Nebraskans need & deserve this expertise, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences will be cut.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln eliminates the Earth and atmospheric sciences 8-0, educational administration 7-1, statistics 7-1, textiles, merchandising and fashion design 7-1 programs.

One of the essential projects of humanity is building a world in which appropriate resources and energy are directed toward a million crucial problems so the rest of us can go to bed knowing they're being handled.

The collapse of that project specifically is perhaps the great tragedy of our age.
Even as a Millennial TurboLiberal for whom this website is made I have to admit I get pretty tired of reading about one trillion problems I neither understand nor can solve. "THOUSANDS of octopi are dying off the coast of Madagascar" alright I'm not in charge of that. That's not my job.
