I've learned, over the past two days, that there are a LOT of people working in the TTRPG space who think you need to fully buy out an artist's copyright in order to use the work you commission from them in your book and like... man. I really need people to understand the industry they work in.

I don't wanna spend all my time talking about copyright and licensing but I feel really strongly about protecting artists' rights - especially with all that's going on with AI and LLM training rn.

I'm posting this because I don't want freelance artists to get shafted by people who don't know how this works. If a publisher (especially a small press publisher!) is asking for copyright transference without paying you correctly for that - DO NOT WORK WITH THEM. They DO NOT need to 'own' the work

There are a LOT of people in this thread that do not understand how copyright works and that is really really scary 🙃
Begging small press indie RPG people to understand you're not in the games industry you're in the publishing industry. You *need* to understand how licensing works if you're going to be hiring artists.
