Three things from this week’s edition of *adventures with old books* that are both true and salutary: keep looking back at what you’ve already found; keep looking; librarians are ace.

Remember, remember

I’m enjoying the autumn colours in and around the University.

My boys went out guising tonight as, respectively, a ghost, and the ghost of Gustav Mahler. Don’t ask.

Huge congratulations, Hester!
Somewhat astonishingly, here it is, a book, a thing in the world... More, including acknowledgements, soon❤️

A fantastic and moving performance of ‘La Boheme’ tonight by Scottish Opera.

Pleased to have a chapter in this great chunk of a book. Congratulations to @loughnrv.bsky.social and Will Sharpe on a job well done.

Thanks, Fraser - that’s v kind of you.

First public outing for ‘Zachary Boyd’s Books’ last night. Thanks to the Centre for Scottish and Celtic Studies for hosting, and to everyone who came along in person and online.

Not sure what auld Zachary would make of it all, but he was in The Times yesterday and The Scotsman today.

Fabulous to see the multiple discoveries made about one of our UofG predecessors by @profastreete.bsky.social - magnificent and proper scholarly hard work.

Zachary Boyd (1585–1653) was a minister, poet & #UniversityofGlasgow academic who lived through one of Scotland’s most turbulent centuries. His rediscovered library offers a rare glimpse into the mind of a man who met kings and wrote plays at a time of revolution.

the images will form part of MILTON'S LIBRARY, an open-access site featuring the 10 books positively identified as milton's w/ transcriptions/translations of his marginal notes.

Enjoying the autumn colours and skies in Dumfries and Galloway.

Excellent attendance at lectures and seminars this term. Students v engaged. A joy, really.
We've joined the blue sky! Just as the skies darken for winter too

Pleased to have a copy of @drnaomibaker’s new book, ‘Voices of Thunder’. Buy it, read it, order it for your libraries- it’s a brilliant, timely book.

🎶 I wrote a piece on 'Songs and Fancies', Scotland's earliest printed music book. Many thanks to Jane Petteree over at Soundyngs blog for hosting!

Today I finished the first draft of my new book. It’s hard to write anything, really, and especially so given the state of the world at the moment. So I’m proud of getting to this point. Cheers.

A decent coffee and a few hours to myself - bliss.

I only met him once but still remember his encouragement and warmth. Rest in peace.

I was delighted to have a chance to be on what turned out to be Melvyn Bragg’s last series of In Our Time and also thrilled that an article in The Times today lists our episode (on George Herbert) as one of the best 15 ever! You can listen to it here: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m...
