Aaaaand this was 2025... #OpenAccess. Thank you @openlibhums.org @janewayolh.bsky.social @siliconchips.bsky.social and all the incredible editors, copyeditors, peer reviewers, authors and friends. Patience and kindness will get us there. Happies and merries! 🎄🙏

That time of the year when talking to family members reveals that the adoption of GenAI (say ChatGPT) to outsource and delegate mundane tasks (shopping lists! travel itineraries!) is more widespread than imagined within the relatively cushioned (often soundproof) walls of academia. Really worrying.

Democracy dies redacted.

An absolute joke.

As expected! 🤔 Merry Christmas!

Looks like the DOJ website is struggling with so many visitors. Possibly for its first time ever.

Today I repotted my 10-year-old Rhipsalis Baccifera Horrida, whose name is Rulfo, and gave it cactus food, and it looks so much happier already. Speaking of achievements. It is native of Madagascar, not Mexico, but makes me feel at home and I'm amazed at how much it's grown over the years.

Unavoidable (perhaps) feeling of anticlimax once things are wrapped up for another solar cycle... challenge is to feel fufilled, satisfied one did the best one could possibly do under the circumstances. No need for effusive, explosive instant metrics- what's done is done no matter what.

I agree it is demoralising. Sometimes where there is big money there is also a lack of big thinking, tho. At this stage small-scale thinking is likely to create less damage (all the tech bros praise themselves for being 'big thinkers').

Oh no, very sad news. An inspiration- my sincere condolences. :-(
All of us at RLUK were shocked and saddened to hear the news that Paul Aryis has died. Paul was committed to building up the library community - as well as his work at UCL he generously gave his time and wisdom to a wide range of conferences, workshops, and committees.

We have responded to the OfS consultation on quality regulation. We welcome some proposals, including the expansion of TEF to all providers. Yet we are concerned about proposals to transform the TEF’s core aims and raise the stakes of TEF performance.

Here are our key takeaways:

I find the unwillingness to address the absolute disaster that Brexit has been directly and out loud profoundly irritating- the cultural amnesia whilst we walk through the rubble is difficult to process.

Meanwhile, all the money and resources wasted in partially undoing the incredible act of self harm that Brexit was... and in the meanwhile, how many young people missed out and had their fates completely altered?

Today, we make further steps in our renewed EU-UK strategic partnership.

We have concluded the negotiations for the UK’s association to Erasmus+ in 2027.

Bringing back Erasmus+ for our young people, opening the door to new shared experiences and lasting friendships.

Restricting visas for care workers will only make things work for the UK care sector and society at large. An idiotic and evil thing to do, motivated by bigotry, not the wellbeing of the country.
Hundreds of overseas staff working in social care and the NHS travelled to Westminster today to lobby MPs over plans to restrict visa rules for care workers.

I used to be semi-effective at sharing stuff I've worked on (including vivas etc) but have just been swamped and now utterly exhausted. Running on fumes.
