I also made the first trading card of Mechanical Comics Personae. Hopefully will be a series. Super limited run. Because useless printed matter can be joyful. manzanamaspress.bigcartel.com/product/mech... UK only so far, sorry. #ComicsStudies

The algorithm has some uses... ;)

Essentially our a priori should be asking "do we really need this stuff in the first place?" instead of assuming it is here to stay and that we have no choice but to try to find its positive uses.

...what I wanted and still want is to ask more open questions, including "what is this exactly? How does it work? What are its implications? Why does it exist? Do we really need it? What for? For whom?" etc.

In my own stance on, say, comics and AI, the starting premise was _never_ “hey kids, of course that GenAI can enhance comics, let's see how that happens". It wasn't either “GenAI will definitely destroy comics, let’s see how that happens”-

It is hugely problematic that we are not willing to step back and ask questions: what is this doing? Do we really need this? Instead, the assumption is that we do, that we have it, and that therefore it's always-already a good thing.

Needless to say for many (particularly here whatever here in Bsky nmeans) the answer would always already be "no it can't", but I do find it worrying for how many GenAI is _always-already_ something with potential benefits and that the question is looking into how exactly it does that.

I should have asked ChatGPT how to write this thread.

Most scholars, educators, may be too busy to even encounter these ads let alone think about them and their implications. Their reach is significant. On YouTube alone OpenAI has 1.88M followers.

Not this but part of the same campaign. www.youtube.com/watch?v=To04...

If this what Generative Artificial Intelligence is for... it's clear we don't really need it...

Yesterday I saw a new (to me) ChatGPT advert on a bus stop; no text on the poster except the small "ChatGPT" logo; image of a woman cooking holding her mobile phone (chatting with OpenAI's bot about a recipe? Asking for positive feedback and reassurance?).

These are properly sad times.
