Hello new followers! For those I don't know yet, let me introduce myself:

- I'm an American working at Cardiff University
- My work focuses on animosity between political groups, misinformation, and support for democratic norms.
- I tend to be much more of a doomer than my empirical results warrant

Absolutely right. I criticise BBC News, because we need it to be as good as we know it can be. People like Farage criticise the BBC, because they work for its competitors and don't want it to exist.
🎯 Davey is spot on. "We can have criticism of the BBC, but within that, we need to recognise how valuable an institution it is [and how] precious to our country. And that's one of the reasons why people like President Trump and Nigel Farage, want to undermine the BBC." 👏🏽~AA

“More and more cabinet members — Rubio, Miller, Noem — live on military bases now, & it's another parallel to Iraq, where the administration lived in the Green Zone. There’s something deeply unhealthy about a society where leaders are literally shut off from the communities that they govern.”
Don Moynihan on "Purge, Merge, and Surge"
"Instead of surging in Iraq, it’s happening here in American cities."

This study of the 2005 London bombings was the first in which we proposed that supportive behaviour among survivors in an emergency is due to extension of the boundary of the self-category, which occurs in such events due to perceived common fate.

Haha. That passage stuck out for me too!
While going through the proofs for "The British General Election of 2024" (out very soon!) I came across this - Paul Johnson of the IFS's verdict on Labour's manifesto last year. Labour's current attempts to claim the need to break their tax pledges was impossible to forsee don't stack up

The Heritage Foundation, the intellectual engine behind the 922-page blueprint that has become the key policy manual for Donald Trump’s second term, is partnering with a constellation of European nationalist far-right movements to export its playbook.

This has not gotten much attention, but it should.

Virginia under Youngkin returned to an insanely harsh system where people convicted of any felony lose their voting rights FOR LIFE.

Dems' win this week mean they'll get to advance a constitutional amendment to end lifetime disenfranchisement.

Aside from the crucial voting system difference, the Social Democrats over this period have haemorrhaged votes to progressive parties and are currently on course for their worst result in 110yrs, while the Green Left are set for their best ever.

The Danish People's Party are currently gaining.
what are the odds that the people in Downing Street briefing this out would also break out in hives at the mere mention of proportional representation?

This seems beyond serious to me. Here’s why: if this software contradicts the fact of one’s citizenship, how far do they take it? All the way to deportation? (And then they have a pretext, “we’ll we were just following the technology.” This is pure science fiction dystopia sh*t).
According to reports, ICE officers are being told to trust the results of a faulty facial recognition app over evidence of citizenship.

The Trump administration is steamrolling our due process and privacy rights to support its mass deportation agenda.
You Can't Refuse To Be Scanned by ICE's Facial Recognition App, DHS Document Says
Photos captured by Mobile Fortify will be stored for 15 years, regardless of immigration or citizenship status, the document says.

Trump is still the charismatic leader and driver of the MAGA movement.

Yet, ambitious Republican politicians are already jockeying to inherit his base.

History and academic research suggest that replacing a charismatic leader is hard, and that they’ll struggle to replicate his appeal.

4) Be wary of claims that these 2025 election results were mainly about persuasion or voters changing their minds.

Turnout was likely an import part of the story (see @electproject.bsky.social ->
bsky.app/profile/elec...)
Pretty clear pattern that 2025 turnout in the Trumpiest Virginia localities lagged the most behind their 2024 turnout

2) Coordinating a broad, pro-democracy movement is *hard*.

But these results matter. They signal to both the public and political elites that Trump is vulnerable and they help galvanize opposition. www.bbc.com/news/article...
