Let's build more homes!

Thank you to @sightline.org, Oregon Smart Growth, Habitat for Humanity Portland Region, @pnwelcome.bsky.social, @npartnerships.bsky.social, @1000oregon.bsky.social and so many other advocates who helped shape these bills to address Oregon's housing underproduction. 🏘️
Oregon needs to build more homes to tackle our housing crisis, and we need to make sure these homes are accessible to Oregonians at all income levels, at all stages of life. I'm so thrilled to see SB 1521 and 1567 advance out of committee.

Oregon's SB 1521, modernizing inclusionary zoning in the Portland metro area, unanimously passes Senate Housing. 🎉

Based on 10 years of lessons, it gives cities new policy options + a requirement that such programs be fully funded.

Moves to senate floor!

Portland: Neighbors Welcome endorsed House Bill 4136 - submit testimony before Monday’s hearing!
Via the "Mortgage Interest Deduction", Oregon subsidizes vacation homes and other second homes

Government subsidies are best directed towards people who need help, rather than the already wealthy.

If you agree, write in to support this bill: olis.oregonlegislature.gov/liz/2026R1/M...

Tonight at 6, PNW will be joined by planners from BPS working on updates to zoning in the central city.

If you believe that an arbitrary; paint-by-color ass patchwork of height limits is dumb, then come participate in the Q&A they'll be giving.

If you think arbitrarily capping building heights in our downtown, then here's an opportunity to express that and express your disappointment that BPS is unwilling to do that with this project.
Hello wonderful neighbors! Our next happy hour is TOMORROW, February 5th at Migration brewing on Williams from 6-8PM! We are excited to announce that we will be joined by members of Portland's Bureau of Planning and Sustainability who are working on the Central City Code Amendments project!

You may not believe that new-builds lower rents, but your landlord does.
I’m at a lunch for landlords (yknow, for research) and the speaker is predicting that rents in Portland will start heading up again in 2026 “as new supply remains constrained”

To the people who do this for a living, cause and effect couldn’t be clearer

Especially in this age of nightmarish transit cuts wouldn’t it be nice if we made it possible for more neighbors with average incomes to live in the neighborhoods that still have service/have some of the best biking in the country??
In Portland, we can allow people to make those choices for themselves by re-legalizing building affordable, smaller but still family size homes in inner neighborhoods! (portlandneighborswelcome.org/inner-eastsi...)

Great stuff from @sightlinenw.bsky.social on how fixing elevator policy is a critical initiative to addressing America's housing affordability crisis.
Ever lived in a building with an elevator? I haven't. It wasn't until recently that I realized how unusual this is.

In most of the rich world, elevators aren't just for tall buildings in big cities. They're all over.

To be age-friendly & accessible, our society needs to change this. Here's how.
Video: Fixing North America’s Big Elevator Problem | Sightline Institute
Our bans on smaller elevators block accessible homes, and our insistence on unique standards drives up prices.

wapo.st/49qfhDa Most people prefer a larger home in abstract, but many people would be happier with less square footage in exchange for proximity to the people and places that enrich their lives!
Column | Why smaller houses can lead to happier lives
It turns out asking “Are you happy with your home?” yields a very different answer than “Are you happy with your life?”

Some have said that single-stair (left) has moved faster than elevators (right). Certainly there's been way more single-stair legislation, but it got started around 2021 by @holz-bau.bsky.social, while elevator reform dates just to mid-2024. So it's moving at a similar pace, just with a later start.

Billions of dollars to ODOT for continued endless polluting freeway expansions, while TriMet and other transit agencies across the state prepare for massive service cuts.

A profound public policy failure of Oregon government. #orpol #orleg
Go to trimet.org/servicecuts to learn more about the service cuts, share your feedback this month and help us shape the future of our transit service. The survey closes Jan. 31.

If public policy can make elevators cheaper to build, not only will we build more homes in the middle of our amenity-rich and desirable neighborhoods, but all the homes we do build will be accessible to people who can't always take the stairs.

housing affordability and accessibility overlap!
The Americas see about 3% of global elevator installations as of 2020. The U.S. & Canada: even less.

But we've stuck with our own unique set of elevator codes, as if elevator companies still have no choice but to beat a path to our door.

Nope! "Everywhere else" is a bigger common market now.
