this is a good reminder of how things that are shitty but have been accepted as normal and inevitable can actually turn out to be abnormal and evitable with some science, time, education and political will

What a waste of energy. This will be the third vote. The park is more popular than ever. Voters aren't going to convert the third most popular park in the city to a road.

There was literally a citywide ballot measure about this 13 months ago?

Wtf are we doing? I'm sorry to everyone whose side lost. Losing sucks! I lose fights all the time. But you were clearly the losers and you need to move on.

This is a great article, end to end, and i'm glad to see public power actually mentioned.

incredible that the oldest scam in the book — “look away from the greed and poor leadership that destroy your chance to make a career, it is the [blanks] that stole your job!” — still works

This is a wild hack. a16z gave a million dollars to startup called Doublespeed. They use a phone farm to flood social media with AI generated influencers and ads. A hacker remotely broke into the phone farm, unmasking the AI influencers/fake accounts, gave us the data www.404media.co/hack-reveals...

Something I’ve come to understand is workers’ job market confidence isn’t necessarily about whether they have a good job, but their sense of their risk of being laid off and whether they could find a new job which is reflected more in hiring and quits rate.

If we are banning cell phones for kids we need to be talking about banning chatbots for boomers

properly funding public schools and ensuring all kids have access to a counselor, a safe place to sleep at night and enough food to eat would do way more to "protect kids" than anything you could do related to Internet policy

but for some reason the "think of the children" crowd never wanna do that

This tracks with my experience. DHS made up stories like this in Chicago, too. Every story ICE told about being attacked by community members was debunked in court. To assume anything they say is even potentially credible is irresponsible and out of touch with reality.
Re: the ICE actions in south Minneapolis Monday. DHS said "rioters" attacked officers with rocks and pepper spray. Note: I received lots of evidence and didn't see any rocks, the only pepper spray I saw was ICE agents sometimes spraying each other. I did see snow and possibly ice being thrown. (1)

Every few years there's a bunch of "pivot to video" discourse about how creatives should all start making videos instead of doing text-based work. And every few years we discover again that the supposed "popularity" of video is based on fake audience numbers created by the video platforms.

I lived thru the end of public smoking. Early in my career I presented to city councils who were smoking, in front of audiences who were smoking.

Smoking in restaurants, airplanes, hospitals…

All of that seems insane now, but it was very controversial when we DID change it.

We CAN change things.
It’s crazy that people used to be able to just smoke cigarettes wherever they wanted
