Tom Noonan was the ultimate "That guy is in this? Oh hell yeah, count me in" actor. Manhunter. The House of the Devil. The Monster Squad. Anomalisa. Synecdoche, New York. He had a presence like no other.

The older I get, the more sympathy I have for people who got hated for making weird but ultimately harmless art or acted cringe when put under pressure...

... and less sympathetic to people who were predatory or manipulative online.

I still think about the earlier concept art for Obi Wan in Phantom Menace a lot. Clearly reaching back (to an iffy degree, maybe) into the Toshiro Mifune influence but clearly establishing Luke’s ROTJ threads as traditional Jedi garb.

OK I've had enough Star Wars discourse for a while, thanks everyone who left thoughtful comments or provided interesting collaborating material from the early years of EU lore 🤝

My viewpoint that Star Wars worked great as a trilogy and poorly as a universe remains, but hey it was pulp fiction fun

one of those things that forever shifted my view of George Lucas and made me realize he didn't really know what he was doing in the later movies:

the so-called "Jedi robes" are just clothes that normal people on Tatooine wear, as seen in Star Wars (1977)

What's so amazing about Jim Henson as a puppeteer is that he could literally be explaining that Kermit is made out of felt and ping pong balls and yet Kermit still feels alive the whole time he's doing it

I'm hardly the first person to note this, but it's enormously instructive that our President and his followers saw the message "THE ONLY THING MORE POWERFUL THAN HATE IS LOVE" and understood it, correctly, as an attack on them
What a moment.

IM SO PROUD OF MY CITY!!!
When I moved to Seattle in 2015, I signed the lease for my first apartment on Super Bowl Sunday. I watched the Seahawks lose at the one yard line with my new neighbor.

I moved to a broken city! I don’t really care about football, but I want this for my city! I happy for Seattle!

one of the greatest human triumphs of my lifetime is the relentless, unceasing, heroic effort by DECADES' worth of doctors and scientists to find a cure for a disease much of the world didn't take seriously for years because it predominantly affected a community they thought kinda deserved it
Just because good news is worth celebrating:

There is now a Prep medication that is an *every six month* injection.

HIV has, effectively, a vaccination.

To be an archivist, professional or diy, is to say “I will care for this thing that means a lot to me but objectively blows like a lost gospel from the bible”

Apparently they found a better print of Manos and it’s getting a 4k restoration I’m so happy. That movie still sucks.

Not to sound like a nerd but it bugs me whenever I see people say that the Obi-Wan and Darth Vader duel in the original Star Wars is too lame and slow and should be more intense or flashy like the prequels. It’s not supposed to be a long epic scene! It’s tense! They’re testing each other!

There are very few things that fill me with wonder, but if I had to name one, it is that we are still co-existing with dinosaurs today.
The #dinosaurs of today are as bizarre and extravagant as those of the Mesozoic, and we know little about many of them. Among the groups I'm especially interested in are #cassowaries, and I've been fortunate enough to work on them. Here's one of my favourite articles... tetzoo.com/blog/2023/4/...
The Great Florida Cassowary Relocation Event of 2023 — Tetrapod Zoology
Regular readers of Tetrapod Zoology will be aware that I’m a big fan of cassowaries….

This is Jerry Lawson. He invented the video game cartridge for the Fairchild Channel F system. Because of his invention, many consoles had cartridges and CD formats and would become the norm.

The Atari 2600, NES, Genesis, and many consoles wouldn't exist without him.

Happy Black History Month.
